ENGAGEMENTS OF CHARLES EDWARD It is somewhat Surprising that the Patchoguc Stables two cracks Ncnlon and the amazingly fast Charles Edward have as yet taken no part in the racing of the year A late campaign for them may have been decided upon as u matter of stable policy but the stronger probability is that some leg ailment calls for a long and careful preparation Last year Charles Edward did not bloom into per ¬ fect condition until the Brighton Beach meeting arrived There he was a magnificent specimen of the thoroughbred at his best and it is doubtful whether any other horse in America could then have beaten him tit any distance from a mile to a mile and a half It was there that ho won the Brighton Mile in 1371 and defeated Ballot in a canter by four lengths Each carried 114 pounds and Charles Edward could unquestionably have effaced the mile record held by Dick Welles and Kiamesha In the Seagate Stakes at a mile and an eighth he made the Lawrence Realization winner Dinna Ken appear like a selling plater defeating him by six lengths In the remarkable time of l30g with 120 pounds on his back In the Brighton Derby hard held throughout and with 126 pounds up he ran the mile and a half route in 230A with Frank Gill then at his best never able to get near him and four lengths away at the finish finishThese These three marvelous races serve to show what Charles Edward is capable of when in his best rac ¬ ing condition and it is a matter of real regret that be has not as yet been able to go to the post Bal ¬ lot needs an opponent of his own great speed and ability to carry high weight successfully and lit and good Charles Edward would be that horse Ballot or no other horse for that matter has ever run three such consecutive races as those of Charles Edward cited and it Is to be hoped he will be seen in action in some of his remaining Sboepshead Bay engagements These are the following followingJune June 26 Sheepshead Bay Handicap 1 mile mileJuly July 1 Advance Stakes 1 516 miles milesJuly July 2 Coiicy Island Handicap 1 1S miles milesJuly July 4 Commonwealth Handicap 1 14 miles
