UNEXPECTED VICTORY VICTORYft ft 1 Cherovan Scores Before Largest PreDerby Crowd in History Historyv v Oddesa Girl Four Eleven and South land Beau Follow Home in the Order Named LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 Before the largest preDerby crowd in the history of Churchill Downs Cherovan carried the Shady Brook Farm silks of Theodore E Mueller local patron to an unexpected vic ¬ tory in the Latonia Purse which occupied a featured position on this afternoons pro ¬ gram Calumet Farms Four Eleven was in ¬ stalled an oddson favorite in the field of seven threeyearolds meeting at six furlongs under allowance conditions but she tired in the final sixteenth to finish third as second ¬ ary honors went to the Oddesa Farms Oddesa Girl threefourths of a length back of Gherovan and half a length before the choice Southland Beau was a close fourth fourthThe The track was in good condition through ¬ out the day and Cherovan required 113 to cover the distance Under a warm sun the condition of the course improved steadily and there was no question but what it would be at its best for the Derby tomorrow if the skies continued clear clearFour Four Eleven and Lake View cut out the early pace with Andeson taking his mount back on the turn to place her on the outside She moved up again to assume the lead in the stretch but in the meantime Basil James had brought up the gelded son of Cherokee and Vansylvania on the outside to bid for the lead Oddesa Girl also had improved her position by coming between horses horsesAll All through the final furlong Cherovan wore down Four Eleven and was drawing away from her slowly as Oddesa Girl also finished in more determined fashion to run second Southland Beau finished fastest of ofall all to be fourth as Lake View was fifth fifthJ J E Wideners Bull Dog filly On De ¬ livery scored her second victory in as many starts when she turned back a band of seven other twoyearolds over four and a half furlongs in the fourth event to chalk up another win for the favorite players On Delivery ridden by Leon Haas led all tha way and in spite of bearing out in the stretch won with a length and a half to spare Liberty Scout took down second money with third going to CoSport and fourth to Don Dash Eastorian was eliminated at the start when Razzle Dazzle broke into her
