33RD RUNNING OF THE DIXIE Eight Named to Contest the 10000 Added Pimlico Fixture Fi ¬ nance Has Top Weight PIMLICO Md May 7 The Dixie Pim licos spring special for horses in the handi ¬ cap division will have its thirtythird run ¬ ning tomorrow The historic classic was first contested as the Dinner Party Stakes in 1870 when it was won by Preakness for which the race was named Many of the turfs truly great are among the list of its winners winnersThis This yearls Dixie carries an added value of 10000 and eight have been named to con ¬ test over the mile and threesixteenths These include the best of the handicap stars quar tered in this sector The field lacks the color that has been lent it in some previous run ¬ nings by the presence of moreillustrious names Under the weights assigned by rac ¬ ing secretary Frank J Bryan there could hardly be a more evenlybalanced lot to contest the valued prize Favoritism in the Dixie is hard to place as many of the en ¬ trants have shown enough to warrant earn ¬ ing the bulk of public support supportMrs Mrs Emil Denemarks Finance is the top weight of the eight named overnight The son of Bull Dog Bourse gave evidence that he has been brought to peak condition when he was winner of the Brookland Wood Hand ¬ icap In that test Finance shouldered 120 pounds and administered defeat to six highly regarded opponents at a mile and onesix ¬ teenth teenthF F M Alger Jrs Azucar finished third to Finance in their meeting Monday He fin ¬ ished stoutly in that effort and left the impression that he would be better suited at todays increased distance A spotty per ¬ former Azucar has displayed keen ability when in peak condition conditionMrs Mrs John D Hertz has named Count Arthur for the Dixie and the son of Reigh Count has been shipped here expressly for this engagement Prior to leaving New York Count Arthur demonstrated his fitness by winning the mile and onesixteenth Rialto Handicap at Jamaica in a manner to sug ¬ gest that he would be ready for the addi ¬ tional furlong of the Dixie He is asked to carry 115 pounds poundsDark Dark Hope raced to victory in the 1936 renewal of the Dixie and his owner is send ¬ ing him back to attempt another score He has been under silks twice this season in Maryland His first outing was obviously a conditioner when he was sent six furlongs in the Harford Handicap Later he turned in an excellent fourth in the Philadelphia Handicap His best races have been over a distance of ground groundCalumet Calumet Dick will carry the silks and tha hopes of E K Bryson The son of Gallant Fcx has earned a large following by his two victories in Maryland this spring He ac ¬ counted for the mile and seventy yards Bowie Handicap under 116 pounds and came right back to annex major honors in the Southern Maryland Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth while carrying 121 pounds
