f DERBY m RECORD SixtySecond Running in 1936 Re ¬ lets With Unusual Incidents S and Much Rough Riding LOUISVILLE Ky May 7 Morton L Schwartz Bold Venture won the sixtysec ¬ ond running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs a year ago in what prob ¬ ably has gone down in turf annals as one of the roughest runnings of the historic fixture and though the son of St Germans may have been the best horse in the race anyway his victory was decidedly a lucky one Lucliy because he had clear sailing whereas a number of the other starters inpluding the oddson favorite Brevity which finished second met all manner of Interference no little of which was caused by ihe Scmvartz colt himself himselfAs As a rcsvlt of the tactics of some of the jockeys in the race three of them were set down for fifteen days each the offend ¬ ing jockeys being Ira Hanford who rode the winncr George Burns who handled In ¬ dian Brcom vhich finished third and Nick Wall who finished fourth with Coldstream ColdstreamAmong Among the principal victims of Tough rid ¬ ing and other interference besides Brevity which rrc3 knocked to his knees shortly after the start were Granville which un ¬ seated Jimmy Stout when in close quarters immediately after the break Bien Joli and Merry Pete Bien Joli was badly jostled about on the second turn to be eliminated while Merry Pete was badly bumped shortly after the getaway getawayBold Bold Venture breaking from No 13 post position began to improve his position fast after about three furlongs took command ap ¬ proaching the final half mile and then un ¬ der strong handling managed to withstand the rush of the illfated Brevity to win by a head After being knocked back at the start Brevity had to race wide while im ¬ proving his position thereafter and though closing boldly was not quite able to get up although the general feeling among the 70 000 which witnessed the spectacle was that Joseph E Wideners star ridden by W D Wright was the best horse on that me ¬ morial afternoon afternoonIndian Indian Broom which came here highly touted from California got into a contend ¬ ing position before reaching the clubhouse turn and held it to the head of the home stretch where he weakened when called up ¬ on by his rider He finished six lengths off the leaders and three before Coldstream The others in the field of fourteen were well strung out as they filed past the judges judgesBold Bold Venture was one of the outsiders in the betting on the Derby and those who wagered on his chances were enriched to the extent of 43 for 2 while the value of the stake to the winning owner was 37725 The winners time for the mile and a quarter over the prevailing fast track was 203 203Although Although the 1936 running of the Derby was probably the roughest ever staged it also probably was the most thrilling from a spectators point of view for phases of it still are being widely discussed wherever horsemen or fanciers of the sport gather Churchill Downs racing officials however threaten to deal most severely with the offenders if there are any recurrences of last years rough riding in this years re ¬ newal of the Derby
