Devils. Luck Registers Initial Score of Season Rinaldo Finishes Half Length Off Victor at Narragansett NARRAGANSETT PARK, Pawtucket, R. I., June 29. Devils Luck, a Wheatley-bred gelding who has raced obscurely in this region all spring, finally connected in the Chalkstone Purse, feature of the Narragansett card. Devils Luck, half a length to the good of Rinaldo at the finish, was lightly considered by the crowd, rewarding his scattering of backers with a 8 payoff. Four lengths to the rear of the real contention, Shadow Shot nosed out Archer for the show award. Prom the start in front of the stands, this mile and a sixteenth trip was strictly a duel between Devils Luck and Rinaldo. The pair raced as a team most of the way, lengths to the good of the others, and the winner had to be the best to earn the decision. Rinaldo, ridden by Herb,Clag-gett, went wide entering the stretch, carrying Devils Luck with him. The latter, lapped on the rail horse at the time, may have suffered a certain disadvantage in the drive, but he responded to Smithers urging and outgamed his opponent through the final quarter. Shadow Shot never menaced the two leaders, this pair negotiating the extremely glib strip in 1:44, only three-fifths off the track mark for the distance. Sultry weather held the crowd down to 9,335 this afternoon and again the form players were not fortunate, outsiders accounting for most of the races on the program. Hot Slippers, an Our Boots filly, raced by Keene Daingerfield for the Strodes Creek Farm Stable, kept her 1948 record unblemished when she earned a camera decision over Gladys H. in the Greenwich Purse. Kandy Comfort showed an encouraging effort to finish third, a half length farther back. This dash was clocked in 1:11 for the six furlongs and was bitterly disputed by a half dozen well-watched fillies from the drop of the flag, Hot Slippers finally outgaming her opposition in a rugged drive. Antonio Fernandez was up on the winner, who was conceding eight pounds to Gladyh H.
