; Binky B. Registers His Fifth Victory Of Year in Pimlicos Good Goods Purse I Wears Down Mahoon to Tally By Neck; Le Gaulois Wins Juvenile Dash in Fast Time By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 16.— Turning in his usual consistent effort, William Y. Goldsboroughs Binky B. this afternoon accounted for his fifth purse of the season in downing five other capable sprinters in the featured Good Goods Purse. Mrs. T. A. Randolphs Mahoon, making his initial appearance of the year, missed by only a neck while one length in advance of Richard E. Carters Oriole. Binky B., a son of Discovery and Modest, and a product of the Country Life Farm, has started but 12 times in his current campaign and has already exceeded his victories of last year, when he was four times successful. Under Nick Shuks urging, the winner was timed in 1:11% and payed to his backers in the shirt-sleeved crowd of 9,475. Grant Thorns Scheming World and Mahoon dueled for the lead along the back-stretch, with Binky B. trailing and Oriole, who had broken tardily, holding down fourth position along the inside. Mahoon soon disposed of Scheming World and at- ► tained a clear lead, while he held well into the stretch. Shuks intermittent urging astride Binky B. on the turn had advanced the Golds-borough six-year-old into fourth position entering the stretch. He continued his rally to move by Oriole and then wear down Mahoon by a neck. Oriole, for the fourth time in the past month, was again the disappointing favorite and, as usual, his backers found ample excuse for the gelded son of Swing and Sway. Actually, it seems that he has gone back a bit and is not the honest performer he was in past seasons, although still capable of knocking out his share of purses, as evidenced by his victory last week in 1:11%. He was, however, carrying only 111 pounds, as compared to a 121-pound package in the Good Goods. Palatine Stables Le Gaulois, claimed for 0,000 in Florida during the past winter, made his third start for Frank Rosens establishment and scored his second set of brackets when he beat a half dozen other juveniles at five furlongs in the fifth race. One length behind the winner came Mrs. L. L. Voight, Jr.s, Rock Reef, who withstood a claim of foul lodged by the rider of Marvin Gaines* Haltafire, who finished third. The winner, under energetic urging by Joe Culmone, equaled the track record Continued on Page Thirty-Eight Binky B. Le Gaulois, a son of Lovely Night, showed speed from the start and raced on the outside while with the leaders on the turn. He drew clear turning into the stretch and held sway while being aided by the erratic stretch running of Rocky Reef, who was extremely rank and swerved sharply to the inside several yards from the wire. It was for this action that the foul was claimed, but it is doubtful that the result was affected, although Haltafire was bothered slightly.
