Lex Registers Front-Running Surprise Victory at Suffolk SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 16. — Lex. a six-year-old stallion owned by J. W. Nizlek, surprised the local patrons this afternoon when he scored a front-running victory in the mile and a sixteenth sixth race which was the best offering of a featureless mid-week program at Suffolk Downs. A length and a half back of the winner, E. B. Ogdens Khyber Pass had plenty to spare over River Divide Farms Reigh Jane. Khyber Pass and Reigh Jane were co-favorites in the test which found the winner paying 4.20. Another hot, sultry afternoon was the order of the day for the shirt-sleeved crowd of 11,206. Their efforts to successfully back favorites were rebuffed as only one of the choices, A. Paces Ray K., in the third race, won at odds-on. After a slight delay caused when Khyber Pass became entangled in the stall gate after rearing, the start found the Ogden gelding taking a short lead. Lex was quick to supplant the leader under jockey Charley Corolla and opened a couple of lengths before Big Inch in the backstretch. The rest of the field was closely bunched all waiting for the leader to come back to them. This is the day Lex has been waiting for during the past two years and he made good use of it by saving something for the stretch run and although Khyber Pass was in a Tunning mood under apprentice Ralph Borgemenke, the former Whitneyite was not up to the task and had to be content with second money. Lex had not graced the winners circle since 1949 at which time it was reported he was cut out to be a good handicap candidate.
