Nightmarish Nightmarish Registers Registers in in Cavalcade; Cavalcade; Oedipus Oedipus Outfences Outfences Corinthian Corinthian Foes Foes Staves Off Charge Of Lone Fisherman Champion Steeplechaser of 1950 Fortunate in Victory; Tangled Handicap to Marta By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 7.— Mrs. Ogden Phipps* Oedipus led all the way in the about two miles of the forty-sixth Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap today, staving off the closing bid of P. Ambrose Clarks Lone Fisherman, to score by almost a length. It -was a dozen lengths back to Kent Millers eternally youthful Elkridge, while Lowry Watkins Tourist List completed the small, but select, field. Jim Smiley rode Oedipus, who paid .70 as he scored his first victory of the year. Last years chase champion had finished second to Pontius Pilate in the International, for his only other start of the season. He earned ,975 today in a moderate 3:43% over a fast track, best for the stake since Bath won in 2:42% in 1942. The majority of the crowd of 19,406 had difficulty settling on a favorite for the Tangled Handicap, best of the flat races, finally settling on Ada L. Rices Danada Gift and letting Ogden Phipps Busanda, winner of the. Suburban last week, go post-ward as third choice. They were wrong on both counts, Woodvale Farms Marta winning the mile test by three lengths from C. V. Whitneys Jazz Baby, while Busanda was almost two lengths farther back and a half length before Danada Gift. Conn McCreary rode Marta, who paid 2.30 as fourth choice and stepped the mile in 1:36%; Kept Close to Pace McCreary kept "Marta fairly close to the pace set by Dark Favorite, took command above the stretch and drew away with authority. Jazz Baby tried to match Martas . move, but wasnt up to it, while Busanda ran an even race and Danada Gift came from far back, appearing to sulk. Though only four went postward in the Corinthian, it proved a pleasing spectacle from the start, with all four of the veteran jumpers fencing cleanly, though Elkridge Continued on Page Thirty-Nine MRS. OGDEN PHIPPS — Owner of Oedipus, winner of the Corinthian Steeplechase Handicap at Belmont yesterday. Oedipus Takes Belmonts Corinthian Under Drive Lone Fisherman Finishes Second; Marta Wins Tangled Handicap Continued from Paoe One 9 surprised his admirers by hesitating slightly at the ninth fence. Smiley sent Oedipus to the front at the start, but was never more than a couple of lengths in the lead except after rounding the clubhouse turn, when he opened up a wide lead until Smiley steadied him again in the run down the backstretch. Lone Fisherman was in second place most of the way, closely followed by Elkridge and Tourist List for more than a mile. Approaching the far turn the second time, Elwood Carter began to send Lone Fisherman in pursuit of Oedipus and the pair gradually drew away from Elkridge and Tourist List. Lone Fisherman took the final fence less than a length behind Oedipus and was gaining fast, but swerved sharply after clearing the fence and then tired to bear in the rest of the way, making it impossible for Carter to ride him out at the finish. To that extent, Oedipus was lucky. Elkridge was running his 115th race and the 50 he earned for third money brought his total gleanings to 26,555. The 13-year-old fenced as well as ever and had speed most of the way, tiring at the end. Elkridge had suffered a fractured nose when hit by a flying log in the International, in which he also finished third. He will probably resume his winning ways at Delaware Park toward the end of the month.
