Porchs Handling By J. J. MURPHY Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., June 7.— Nightmarish, a well played second choice, making his second start of the meeting after having placed three times in succession at Churchill Downs, was a driving winner in the featured Cavalcade Purse, a claiming race, here today. Breaking from outside post position and of a necessity racing rather wide throughout, the black colt was up in time to defeat Heavenly Hash, with Docility ending up in third place. The favored Pensive Lady, the sixth public choice of the day to meet defeat, dropped to last place at the start and was never a contender. The winner, who is owned by M. A. Waldheim and Was saddled By Jake Lowenstein, paid 0.60. Gerald Porch was the successful rider. The feature race, as well as the fifth, was run under a light drizzle and cloudy skies. The track remained fast, however. It was truly a bad day ,for the favorites, whose percentage of wins at this meeting is greatly below par. Some of the choices, notably Pensive Lady, Missab and Garrett C, performed as if they should have been 10-1. [Rocky Sir Surprises A crowd of 8,275 was on hand for the sport, which got under way under pleasant climatic conditions but became more gloomy as the afternoon wore on. Favorites again failed with regularity in the early events, the closest to top money being Arnie, who was second in the fourth race. The affair was at one and one-eighth miles on the grass and the winner was Rocky Sir, an outsider, who came around the early leaders on the stretch turn and paid 4.60. Jockey Don Wagner, who will be grounded for the next 10 racing days through suspension, won his second race of the afternoon on Rocky Sir. The boy had registered with Lass Quest in the second. Arnie had a bad break in the early running when he was forced into the hedge nearing the first turn, but he was gaining at the finish. Lass Quest, Wagners first winner, com- t pleted a 3.00 Daily Double when she led practically the entire distance. The first victor was Sun Idol Boy, who sprinted to a clever win. He was a well-played second choice, Technicolor, winner of three races early in the meeting, being the choice. Avelino Gomez steered Sun Idol Boy. Honors in the third went to Dry Summer, performing for owner W. E. Britt, of Clay-Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Northern Star and Roman Fair Dead-Heat in Delaware Dash Continued from Page One holding the lead briefly along the back-stretch. Northern Star, along the inside, attained a slight lead before completing the opening quarter-mile and was able to save ground rounding the turn. Atkinson applied the whip liberally early in the stretch run, as did Roman Fairs rider. The two horses held on tenaciously under strong handling and the placing judges needed only slight deliberation before flashing the dead heat sign. R. Roy McClarin and trainer Glen C. Smith, who opened the program with Broad Cross, won their second race of the afternoon when New Oxford accounted for the secondary attraction, a six-furlong dash for ,500 to ,500 claimers. New Oxfords score also completed a double for aprentice Lou Baranello, who scored with Dream Passes in the second event. New Oxford won by a length and a half over Jerry McCarthys Music, with Elmendorf s Cornwall, third. Baranello, who rode his initial winner during the recently concluded Pimlico meeting, has come along steadily and in riding his fourth winner of the meeting has impressed as an excellent prospect. He rated New Oxford nicely in this event and had him home in 1:11%. The mutuel price was 4.00.
