Royal Royal Bay Bay Gem Gem Registers Registers in in Jersey; Jersey; Bashford Bashford Manor Manor to to Mr. Mr. Prosecutor Prosecutor Charges Up From Last Place To Show Way to Park Dandy Favorite With Large Crowd 4 Of 34,588 Draws Away for Clever Win on Sloppy Track By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 9. — Eugene Constantin, Jr.s, Royal Bay Gem came from* a distant laslm the twelfth edition of the Jersey Stakes here this afternoon, ran to the middle of the track coming around the leaders on the stretch turn and drew away with his vaunted late speed to be throwing slop back to his rivals while two lengths in front at the finish. William J. Beatties Park Dandy, a lightly regarded invader from New England, gamely finished in second place and held a head decision over Boncrist Farms Better Goods. Brookmeade Stables County Clare was another length out of the money after having set the pace to the sixteenth marker. Shipping Back to Pimlico A large throng of 34,588 enthusiasts braved heavy showers during the early program to remain to view Royal Bay Gems thrilling performance, which brought gratification to the majority in the form of a .40 mutuel. His time over the solid-bottomed, but water -blanketed, racing strip was 1 : 53 y5 for the mile and a furlong. Constantin, Dallas, Tex., owner of Royal Bay Gem, stated prior in the running that he would return the black son of Royal Gem n. and Bayadere to Pimlico for another Continued on Page Three ♦ Royal Bay Gem Is Victor in Jersey Comes From Last Place to Lead Park Dandy to Wire By Two Over Sloppy Course Continued from Page One crack at his Derby rivals in the Preakness, although he said he was "not anxious to chase Dark Star and Native Dancer again. They are a couple of tough horses." Royal Bay Gem became 5,450 richer as the result of todays event, however, and certainly added to his status for the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, and Constantin may now be a little more enthusiastic than after his colt finished fourth at Churchill Downs. Jimmy Combest. who rode Royal Bay Gem, reported. "When I asked for speed, I got plenty of it. He was running as strongly as I have ever felt him at the finish, and would have gone on all day." W. J. Beattie, who came down from Rhode Island to watch his Park Dandy, said before the race that he would make his homebred a supplementary starter in the Preakness if he ran first, or a creditable second, Robert P. Levys Hueso, also slated to be a supplementary to the Preakness if he performed to expectations, finished fifth, and probably will remain at Garden State Park. Dandolo Shows Way to Turn Royal Bay Gem was a distant last before settling into stride at the beginning of the Jersey, with Combest urging him ever so slightly to smooth out his pace. Berna-dotte Stables Dandolo, a New Jersey-bred, showed the way to the first turn under pressure from County Clare and Hueso was racing wide just behind that pair, while under restraint. Park Dandy raced in the clear and in hand a few lengths farther back, with the others strung out behind. Passing the half-mile marker, it was obvious that Royal Bay Gem was in a running mood. He saved ground rushing for-* wardly, until near the stretch turn. Combest then took no chances as the leaders began to bunch, and steered him to the extreme outside. The winner lost considerable ground, but he was up to the task and clarly the superior horse as the race was run. Social Outcast, a supporting performer to Native Dancer for A. G. Vanderbilt, was outrun from the beginning, but rallied mildly and at the end to finish sixth. Jockey Sammy Boulmetis, one of the most popular boys on this circuit, possibly received a broken left arm as the result of his being unseated from Tower Hill Farms James Beauty during the running of the first race. Boulmetis was taken to Cooper Memorial Hospital where a report was made that his injuries were "minor." Whether "minor" includes a broken arm will be determined by X-rays. James Beauty, who was the favorite, stumbled while dueling for the lead between horses at the far turn and sent Boulmetis flying. Joe Gavegnanos Sweet Goddess went on to win the six furlong affair by a three lengths margin over W. E. Schlusemeyers Fiddlers Girl and Darby Dan Farms Chilog finished third. Sweet Goddess paid 3.00 and supplied the initial half of a 4.80 Daily Double that was completed by Hillside Stock Farms First Whirl, worth 0.80 straight.
