Defeats Assiduous by Neck t With Fly Wheel Third as Favorites Finish Unplaced By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 17.— Better Goods, a chestnut son of Good Goods — Dustaway from the Boncrist Farm of Christopher J. Devine of West Orange, New Jersey, stunned the 18,052 patrons at Suffolk Downs today as he annexed the eighteenth running of the 5,-000 Yankee Handicap. A neck back of the winner, Dave Weissbergers Assiduous finished fast to nose out C. V. Whitneys Fly Wheel. Nine three-year-olds competed in the mile and a furlong stakes with the two choices, Brookf ield Farms Isasmoothie and Greentree Stables Powhatan winding up heads apart in fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Lasswell in Saddle On scoring his initial major victory of his career, Better Goods earned 4,050 of the gross 3,400. That amount is more than the colt had earned in two years of racing. During his juvenile year, he won ,950 with four victories and up until todays race had won once to amass ,550. Overlooked in the wagering, Better Goods paid 2.00 while being timed in 1:51 over a" track termed fast. Glenn Lasswell, who came here from Delaware Park where he won the Kent Stakes last Saturday with Scimitar, rode a Continued on Page Fire Better Gopds Upsets In Yankee at Suffolk Downs Assiduous by Neck, With Isasmoothie, Powhatan Unplaced Continued from Page One heavy race on Better Goods, taking him to the front before reaching the clubhouse turn and keeping the chestnut colt clear but in hand to- the final quarter mile. The pase was rather slow down the backside, 1 with the leader completing the first six furlongs in 1:12%. , On the final turn, Lasswell called on his charge and quickly Better Goods opened a three-length advantage which was just enough to give him a cushion to stave off the bid of Assiduous and Fly Wheel. Better z Goods was in the Yankee with 116 . pounds, giving his runner-up eight pounds and Fly Wheel four. As the race was run, Assidious may have » been best with a better shake of racing luck. The improved son of Sirte moved [ along the inside under the guidance of Albert Widman but was forced to take up j sharply near the three-furlong pole and appeared to be eliminated. Widman managed to ease out, however, and once in stride through the stretch, Assidious was literally flying to just miss the top omney. Fly Wheel was given a rousing ride by Harold Keene, moving down the back-stretch while on the outside, getting through on the inside making the" final bend and closed stoutly under the whip through the final sixteenth of a mile. Jim Beatties Park Dandy, one of the local hopefuls in the Yankee, apparently had no excuse. The Bull Dandy colt was never far off the pace, saved ground as the drive began and was unable to make up appreciable ground in the late stages. Isasmoothies was going smothly under Dave Gorman down the backstretch, about six lengths off the leaders and under stout restraint. The favorite moved closer as Gorman moved him up on the inside rounding the final bend, but he failed to have it when called on in the late stages. Powhatan did not appear to be striding freely as Ted Atkinson moved him on the extreme outside near the half mile pole. The slight jam near the three-furlong pole forced the Greentree colt to continue the outside and with the lost ground necessary to make up to become a real contender, .the colt failed to rally. It was not a total loss for Greentree and Atkinson. The stable sent out Hcrodwink account for iande third race, with Atkinson doing the riding. Atkinson completed a rid-ind double when he skillfully piloted Kajo Stables Marphil to victory in the fifth race. ie e le on n [~ d to n j
