Bold Rogue Registers Stunning Upset Over Mahplay in ThistleDown Feature Rank Outsider in Wagering Closes Fast in Stretch to Down Choice by One Length By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 10. C. F. Legmans Bold Rogue, nicely ridden by Richard Humphreys, scored a stunning upset in the featured Talent Scout Purse here at ThistleDown; this afternoon. The winning son of Bold and Bad paid 50.00 to win 3.40 for place and 3.00 to show. The favored Mrs. A. M. Creechs Mahplay was second a length back and a scant nose in front of Smith and Moores Hobad who had led until just near the wire. Bold Rogue, who was winning for the third time in six starts this season, was timed in 1:12 over the fast track. His previous victories were won at his home park, Wheeling Downs. Hobad gained a short lead as the field streaked along the backstretch with Con-sus, ridden by the veteran Bobby Strange, second a length to" the good of Gatyup. The ultimate winner after breaking -in" third position was taken back somewhat off the early pace and was on the outside of horses in seventh position Hobad drew out by a half length on the far turn with Consus still pressing the pace and Mahplay now third and in along the rail. Bold Rogue had moved along into fourth position and was two and one -half lengths off Hobads pace. Entering the stretch the lead was unchanged, but Consus was showing signs of tiring and Mahplay loomed as the stout factor while still along the rail. Bold Rogue was still fourth, but had closed the gap to a little more than a half length. Hobad, held on tenaciously through the stretch with jockey Emellio Carrillo giving it his best, but Bold Rogue would not be denied and was along in the final strides to the wire to gain the verdict. Mahplay also passed Hobad an eyelash before the wire. Bold Rogue has been running in allowance company while in Wheeling and owned a victory over High Ronda who is considered to be one of the best half-mile campaigners in the East. In one other start over this track he was fourth beaten eleven lengths by Mestiza who is a former stakes winner. Last season Bold Rogue was racing for H. C. "Pete" Allnutt, prominent Maryland turfman, and won five times in 19 starts which was good for nearly ,000. Janet N. Fishbacks Gladdie Girl a first-time starter, accounted for the fourth race while being strongly ridden by the stable rider, Gail Parker. Gladdie Girl is a fine-looking daughter of Noble Impulse; Sister Leona, and was bred by her owner and is trained by Marvin Greene of Leesburg, Va. The homebred victress showed in front at the start and never relinquished that advantage while saving ground throughout. The margin at the end of the five furlongs was a length, with the favored Lot-O-Bim accounting for second money and Amity Hall third, another head back. Gladdie Girl paid 3.30 and was timed in an excellent 1:00 over the lightning fast racing surface. Gladide Girl is a stablemate of Colum-cille, one of the fastest horses ever to run here at ThistleDown and it is said that while they were both at Lincoln Downs this spring that this filly outworked Columcille. The latter ran the fastest six furlongs of-the entire Ohio season last summer, when he was timed in 1:10 over this track. C. H. Everitts White Bones, ridden by the veteran Paul A. Ward, scored an easy four-length decision over Seamar Stables Sassy Shirl in the third race. Sweet Orphan, running for R. L. "Peg" Hanna, was, third at the conclusion of the six furlongs, which was run in 1:12. The winner paid .60 as the first winning choice of the afternoon. The Daily Double paid a handsome 75.20 as F. J. McNultys long-priced Sumbura, ridden by Leroy Cargile, scored a decisive victory in the first race and paid her scattered backers 9.00 The second race was taken by W. E.
