He ran under a stout pull all tins way and could have 1 won by a block had Miller so chosen. Robert Waddell took the long route and was generally 1 poorly handled. Cogswell ran a tair sort of a race. Socapa broke in front but was badly outrun i and neve.-really got to going his best until the stretch was reached, then he did nothing sensa- - tional. Winner— Ch. g, by Hanover -Florence M. Went to post at 2:45. At post 5 minutes. Start good. Won easily ; second and third were J driving to the limit. Holdup was suited by the light weight and ran one of his best races. He I set a good stiff pa«e T_d by the time the stretch was reached had all those behind him raced into ! ! exhaustion. Julius Caesar revived suddenly and made a good showing for him. Domsie had a i 1 rough journey, was poorly ridden and everything considered his race was as good as the winners. I Hub Prather was slow in getting away from the poet and did not seem to have speed enough to keep up in the first part of the race but through the stretch he made up much ground. Flick took Tony Honing all around his field and seemed to be looking for a hole in the fence oh the far turn. Obsidian appeared to be going well in hand passing the half mile ground but when Rose let him down he had nothing left to finish with. Corrected weights— Elsie Venner, 89. Winnei — Ch. f. by Rancocas— Heeley. Went to post at 3:15. Off at the first break to a good start. Won handily; the next three s were doing their best. Minyon is a speedy filly and is in excellent form now. She ran fast enough in the first half mile to tire off all those that tried to contend with her, and from the head of the I stretch home all Rose had to do to win was to hold the fillys head up. Miss Shanley, on the inside close to the rail, finished stoutly and ran a good race. San Mateo was tiring badly and out t to the last ounce at the finish. For some reason unknown Silvers kept Braw Lad far out of it 1 until the race was practically over, it may have been that Braw Lad did not have speed enough 1 to keep tip. but he is generally a front runner and it looked bad to see h?m so far out of it in the first half. Rival Dare ran a good race. So did Pauline J. for about five furlongs, then she stopped to almost a walk. Scratched— 17170 Ella Penzance, 102; 17902- Evelyn Byrd, 103; 17922 Barney F.. 98. Time, 12, 24, 37, 50, 1 :03. Winner— Br. c, by Esher — Lady Caroline. Went to post at 3:45. At po.~t S minutes. Start fair. Won easily at the end after an early .. drive; second hand ridden. Third and fourth driving hard. This was certainly a false run race and Benson Caldwells win was a lucky scratch. He was badly outrun in the first part of the I Z rac 3 and Stuart, evidently thinking he had no chance, pulled in close to the rail and was taking things easy on the stretch turn when all of a sudden those in front began to stop and Caldwell, I finding an opening, hall glided and half bumped his way through. Perhaps the most surprised 1 arson on the grounds was Stuart when he saw he was winning. Sad Sam is not much these days. . E lad he possessed the least bit of quality ho shoidd have won. as he was presented with a flying S start. Lillie Pautland ran a fair race. Dandy Jim was ridden with miserable judgment. Narvaez r" wore him out racing with Sad Sam early, Ben Magen had a very rough journey. He appeared " to have a winning chance at the head of the stretch but was bumped out of it. Tenny i Belle bolted on the turn for home. Overweights— Lillie Pantland, 24 pounds. Entry, place, 8 to 1 ; show. 4 to 1. Sad Sam, place, 8 to 5; show, 4 to 5. Orion got away well, had clear sailing and no excuses. Irma S. made a good showing. Mark Star Cotton when ridden by a competent jockey in the same kind of company. Insurrection had a rough journey. Rollins is a free running horse that races best in front, and he fairly ran away with Master Waldo. Blue Lick was in a tight place all down the backstretch, and never got clear until straightened away for home, then he made up quite a bit of ground. Bright Night finished with a tremendous rush. Jimp, too, closed stoutly, and can be marked for early action. Astor tired badly in the stretch. Hoods Brigade hardly ran his race. He likes a muddy track best. Rollins, place, 2 to 1 ; show, evens.
