TOPSOIL NOT FOR SALE. "Topsoil is not for sale at the present time." This declaration was made by Sam Hildreth recently, and was called out by the published statement that E. B. Smathers, who recently paid 0,000 for McChesney, and is casting about for a likely candidate for the American Derby, had his eye on Hil-dreths Top Gallant colt. Continuing-, Hildreth said: "I intend to know something more about Topsoil than I do at present before I will set a price on him or consider any proposition that may be made for him. Several parties have asked me to set a price on the colt. While I am satisfied that they were acting for some person or persons other than themselves, I do not konw that Mr. Smathers has it in his mind to buy or even try to buy Topsoil. "The statement which has appeared in print that the owner of McChesney has his eye on my colt may be correct, but so far as I actually know Mr. Smathers has never directly ox.. indirectly -made -overturesfor-the purchase of the colt. No one of those who have asked me to set a price has as much as intimated that he was acting in the interest of the Pittsburg harness horseman. It would make no difference though; neither Smathers nor anyone else can buy Topsoil right now."
