W. H. CAREY WINS THE SANTA ANITA. Carman Colt Is Splendidly Ridden by Knapp — Biq Crowd — Heavy Bettinq. Los Angeles. Cal.. January M. — A tremendous crowd saw the hest racing of the season at Ascot Park this afternoon and they gave the bookmakers a drubbing that they will nor soon forget. the bettJag was by far the heaviest of this year. The feature race was the Santa Anita Handicap over the Brooks course. It went to the heavily supported W. 11. Carey, splendidly ridden hy W. Knapp. who rated linn skilfully for the lirst seven furlongs and then wore down Von Tronip in the last IfH yards in a tierce drive. The finish produced much cheering. Many horsemen here hacked Kercheval for the Hums Handicap, and they were wild with delight when the news of the coils Victory was Hashed over the wires. Jockey Kent, who was ruled off yesterday, had just signed a contract to ride for K. Wayland for the reiuaiuder of the year. Wuj laud has the hacking of .Mm Brink, the heaviest netting man here. It is claimed that Brink is 0,000 to the good on the season. It is charged in hotting circles thai when Platoon was beaten by Pantoufle, on January 17. John J. Ryan took I hones ads of dollars oat of handbooks and poolrooms in various parts of the country. The gossips claim that Ryan made it certain that Platoon would not finish first and that this, rather more than the fad that he had been put under the ban at Latonia, was the cause of the official warning be received to rem S la away from the track. Bsntl ration has seen his lx-st days in racing and little may he expected from him in future. Bnlhnan has n..i forgotten boo to get away from ihe post and he Imislies with as much vigor as ot old. Charles L. Btone is the biggest disappointment among the three-year-olds here. He is big and slnggtsh and may do better in races over a mile. The most popular Stable here is lhal of C. T. Boots. His horses are hacked with the confidence horn of the knowledge that the bettor will get s ran for his atone .
