BIG CROWD SEES SPORT AT PIMLICO. Feature Races Are Won by Dr. Keith and Quadrille — Exciting Finishes. Baltimore. Mil.. April 3ft.- Pimlieos spring meeting opened this afternoon with quite a flourish of trumpets. A big turnout of the best element here gave tone to the occasion and the grandstand and lawn were packed. Much of the old time sentiment still hangs around racing in Baltimore and the beat people of the city give the local track their patronage. The racing today was satisfactory iu every particular. The fields were large1, the starts good and the finishes exciting. The first race brought out a good field of sprinters, iu which Will Shields Diamond was made a warm favorite at 7 to ." . Diamond as usual, was on his bad be barter at the post and gare starter Oacle no end of trouble when the barrier went up. He was otr poorly and could never get to the front. Preen took the lead and won from start to finish. Belle Stroine easily took second place from Tickle. The second race for two year-olds was taken by Garths Merry Man, which led from the start. Jasl laetiag long enough to beat out Clorious Betsy. Blciiilicr. the favorite, ran ■ peer race. A big field started in the third race, but the issue was always between Euripides. Wabash Queen and Azeliua. Furipides. as ii-ual. set the pace, but when he was challenged iu the stretch, gare it up. leaving Wabash Queen and Azolina to fight it out. Azeliua outlasted Wabash queen and won easih . The Greea Spring Valley Steeplechase- e/ai one of the features of the afternoon and reealted in a rattling good race. Kara opened an oven money favorite, but at post time the Daly gelding was at 2 to 1 with Dr. Keith. At the start Kara made the running and set a warm pace. Mr. Taylor, on Rocket, forced Kara out for the early part of the course, bat soon dropped back, leaving the real content ion to Dr. Keith, which was fencing splendidly and running well within himself. Two jumps from home. Dr. Keith went up to Kara aud it was all over in a jiffy. The Dudley gelding coming on, won with Beach in reserve. Kara was tiring badly at the mush. The fifth race, the Baltimore Cup. brought o«t the gentlemen riders and was a race of much moment to the swell set. Quadrille, on paper, seemed a cinch and 1 to ,i was the best the bookmakers would lay. Quadrille won. taking the lead on the stretch turn after idle Dream had made the pace. Mr. OBrien took matte:* easy at the finish and The Cricket, coming with a rush at the end, came near to stealing the race. Graajalla won the sixth race just as ins rider pleased after indulging Midas with the lead for half the journey. The last race was something of an upset, the 10 to 1 shot. Akhar, beating out the hot favorite Anna Smith, which could only get third, losing second place to Iarkville. The weather was clear and the track fast. Twenty three bookmaker! drew iu and I hoy hid all they could do to handle the money. Several more could hare clone a profitable business. The tWO-year-Old Possum, owned by Sam lbu man. broke a leg in his work this morning and was destroyed. Jockey 1aii hi ol hoi was set down for ten days for incompetency at the post.
