ATHLETE MUCH IMPROVED. DR. GARDNERS DEFEAT PROVES A GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT. His Chances Aqainst W. H. Carey for the Excelsior Seem Diminished — Berkeley Wins the Union Stakes. Now York, April 22. — Dr. Gardner was unable to concede weight to MMMd karat* like Athlete and Orphan Lad in the handicap at seven furlong- lo day and he was easily beaten after running witli Athlete for three quarters of a mile. It would perhaps be —fair to judge Dr. Gardner on his performance today, as he could not have beta thoroughly warmed up for a bruising race, and bis conquerors were each seasoned by racing, but bis failure to win would seem to hurt bis chances in the Excelsior Friday, as be will have to carry 12.i against V. H. Careys 110. The latter will likely be the favorite. Only two favorites won today. Kerry and Dul-eian. Berkeley, which in his previous race over ibis track had shown much improvement over his Kenning form, was not taken seriously for the Cnion Stakes. Tileing was a heavily backed choice. Berkeley went to the post at IS to 1, led all the way to win by inches from Tileing, which tiuished fast after dropping out of it in the early i ai t w Midy Blakelcy today signed a contract with L. Williams, and the negro jockey will do the riding for the Euiery stable this season. Little . Brady is in the hospital with a broken leg and a badly gashed neck as the result of bis fall with Cooney K. in the last race Saturday afternon. Brady is under contract to George Miller, who considers him a promising lightweight. Jockey .lack Martin is at the track every day. and usually spends the entire afternoon in Frank Kartells box. He takes an optimistic view of his troubles and believes the stewards of the jockey club will yet grant him a license to ride.
