GREAT TRIAL STAKES PROSPECTS. In Ms program for Saturday the Coney Island Jockey Club offers something without precedent in the history of American racing, two stakes each of the guaranteed value of 5,000. These munificently endowed events are the Great Trial, for two-year-olds at three-quarters of a mile and the Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile and a half. The Great Trial closed January 2 this year with 110 nominations, of which lifty-one have lieen declared and one proved ineligible. This leaves fifty-eight now eligible to start, but appearances point to a field of no more than ten. Under the conditions of the race a winner of two stakes of ,000 each, or one of 0,000, takes a penalty of seven pounds, and maidens have an allowance of live pounds. Three colts, Colin, King James and Cohort have earned the penalty and the probabilities point to the following as likely to start: Owner, Sex and Horse. Wt. James R. Keenes blk. c, Colin 120 John E. Maddens br. c. King James .129 Oneck Stables ch. c. Cohort 120 Thomas H. Williams ch. c, Firestone 122 E. R. Thomas b. c. Hen Fleet.. 122 .Tames R. Keenes b. c. Masque .117 Frederick Burlews b. c. Chapultepcc .117 C. R. Ellisons ch. c. Sir Navarre 11T R. T. Wilson, Jr.s ch. c, Beaucoiq 117 11. P. Whitneys b. c. Burgher 117 Of the foregoing Colin lias started three times and won three times, a purse, the Eclipse Stakes and the National Stallion Stakes, all at Belmont Park. He was retired temporarily after his success in the National Stallion Stakes because of bucked shins, but should be entirely recovered and ready to race by this time. Cohort has won the Foam Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, the Great American Stakes at Gravescnd and a purse at Belmont Park." King James won the rich Tremont Stakes at Gravescnd. Firestone won the first half of the Double Event on the first day of the present meeting and had previously won live out of six starts in California, four purses and the Bell Stakes. Ben Fleet has a nursu to his credit and ran second to King James in the Tremont Stakes. All the others are maidens, but several have great reputations based on work in private. Chapultepec in particular showed remark, able speed in trials, but, except in running second to Firestone in the Double Event, has been a failure so far. Charley Ellisons Sir Navarre Is reported to be a high class colt and If ready, should make his debut here. Mr. Whitneys Burgher Is a full brother to Burgomaster. He Is held in high regard by bis owner and trainer, but may be saved, for later events. If he is, however, sent to the post here, he is sure to have a great following. Beaueoup is supposed to be the best of R. T. "Wilson. Jr.s two-year-olds, his best performance being when he ran Colin to a head in the Eclipse Stakes with Wave Vest ten lengths behind the pair. Besides the youngsters named. Sudden Start., Robert Cooper, Smoker. Beckon, Lady Winifred ami Wave Crest are well thought of and some of them inav be seut to the post, but their chances appear slight when compared with those of Colin, Cohort, King James and Firestone.
