WHY CHARLES EDWARD IS ABSENT. Dubois Unable to Secure Miller to Ride His Colt Proposes Another Special. New York. .Tuly IS. The absence of Charles Kd-ward from the Mile Special at Hrighton tomorrow Is due. says Owner Duliois, to his inability to secure tlie services of jockey Miller, who will ride McCarter. Duliois says Charles Kdward is heavy-headed and he believes that Miller is the only lightweight, rider who could handle him properly in such a race as the Special calls for. Dubois offered, however, to run Charles Edward in a sweepstakes for any amount against Peter Pan. Diiina Ken, Montgomery and any of the other cracks of his age at a mile and a quarter four days before the time set for the running of the Hrighton Derby, each to carry either scale or ten pounds under the scale weights. President Fitzgerald said he is willing to add ,500 if such a race can be arranged, but with the departure of Dinna Ken for Saratoga and .1. U. Keenes prompt refusal to run Peter Pan, there is no immediate prospect, of a meeting between these great turf stars to settle the question of supremacy. Dubois added a horse particularly good in muddy going to his siring when he purchased the three-year-old Smiling Tom from August Belmont today. The price paid was not announced, but it is said that it was in tlie neighborhood of .,000.
