REDUCING THE MILE RUNNING RECORD List of All Horses Which Have Run Miles in Races in 1:39 or Better. The third race at Brighton Beach this afternoon Is a mile dash for a ,500 purse. A condition of the purse reads: "The association to add ,000 in specie or plate, at the option of the owner of the winner, should the track record for a mile, 1:3S, be beaten." It happens that the track record for a mile is now 1:..7, but it was 1:3S when the conditions were devised and the winner will capture the extra ,000 if lie runs the mile in better time than 1:38. It has been hoped that Charles Edward and Dr. Gardner would start In this race, but It seems the inducement offered was not sutlicient and only Mc-Carter, Rye, Kentucky Kean and Cressina have been entered. All are speedy horses and a surprising record may be hung up, even if the two celebrities named are not in the conlllct. At Louisville, .May 27, 1S77, Ten Broeck electrified racing enthusiasts by running a mile 1n the then unprecedented time of 1:3! J. Tills record stood until Racine reduced it to 1 ::?. at WiNhing-ton Park in 1S!M. This time was equaled at Morris Park by li Tosea in 1811 ind at the same track Chorister ran a mile in 1:391 In 1SU3. It was not until 1S04 that a mile was run in better than 1 :.!!. Libertine scoring in 1:383 at Harlem, October 21 of that year, it thus requiring seventeen years to reduce the Ten Broeck record to the full extent of a second. Previously In that same year, 1801, a mile had for the first time in this country been run in 1:3!.. This was when George Forbes speedy old selling plater Arab covered a mile in that time at Morris Park June 11, and Ducat equaled Ibis time at Sheepsbead Bay August 28. The Libertine record held good until 1!I0, when Voter ran a mile -in 1:38 at Brighton Beaeh and Oriuiar did the same at Washington Park. In 1901 Brigadier became the record holder by running a mile at Slieeps-bead Bay in 1:371 and held that distinction until Allan-a-Dale cut the time to 1:372 at Washington Park July 1, 1903. Allan-a-Dales supremacy was short-lived, lasting until August 14 of the same year, when Dick Welles established the present record of 1:37s at Harlem. This time was tied by Kiamcsha at Belmont Park October D, 1005 and Is about due to be wiped out. In these days a mile in 1:39 attracts no great attention because fast miles are frequent. Since 1800 it lias been the fashion to make tracks as conducive to speedy performances as possible and the advancing art of track conditioning lias been directed steadily to tlmt end. Still, it is fast running any when: and miles in 1 :38 and fractions are of surpassing excellence. Since Arab lirst ran a mile in 1:3! in 1894, that time has been equaled or surpassed 112 times and as a matter of interest Daily Racing Form presents its readers with the following complete list of all miles run in 1:3! or belter over recognized tracks: Morse.
