DRIVING FINISHES AT FORT ERIE. Winners Heavily Backed Bookmakers to Stand Trial at Welland Today. Buffalo, N. Y., August 20. Keen contests were lu order at Fort Eric tills afternon. A majority of the races resulted in driving finishes and In two of them the winners were In doubt until the offi-clal placing was displayed. All tlie winners were heavily backed. Dick Williams, whose Dele Strome was taken from him out of a selling race Saturday, got busy after Ilarting won the second race and forced bis owner to pay 00 to retain his horse. The bookmakers at Fort Erie will bo forced to make a trip to Welland tomorrow morning to, answer the charge of maintaining a gambling place tiled against them last week. The case has been called for a hearing at 0 oclock a. in., so they should find ample time to lie back at Fort Erie in the afternoon ready for business on the first race. A carload of horses left for Montreal tonight .and among them was the division of the stable which Barney Schrelber has been racing here. L. A. Celhi aud A. E. Gates leave on Wednesday while several other owners will ship on Thursday. C. Pangritz will ship his stable from here to Norfolk on Friday.
