In the Hopeful Stakes he finished second to Peter Pan and in front of Pope Joan, Kentucky Beau, Paumonok, Hickory, Don Enrique, Sir William Johnson and Purslane. It was Peter Pans best race as a two-year-old, lie covering three-quarters in l:12i, with 130 pounds up. McCartcr carried 122. Kentucky Beau, 112 pounds, was a 7 to 5 favorite, but was unplaced. Subsequently McCaiter ran second to him in the Waldorf Stakes at Sheeps-head Bay. This year McCartcr has been a busy and successful racer and has scored five wins out of ten races, with such important events as the Cosmopolitan and Saratoga Handicaps to his credit. His first start was in a inirse at Jamaica, in which he won from Halifax, Inquisitor. Don Domo and four more at five and a half furlongs in 1:07. In the Toboggan Handicap, at Belmont Park he was unlucky and ran unplaced to Ben Ban, Pautoulle and Red River. At Gravesend he defeated Dreamer, De Mund, Prince Hamburg. Hyperion II. and Faust over the "about" three-quarters course for a purse in 1:09JS. Then came his first important success when he won the Cosmopolitan Handicap at Belmont Park May 27. He carried 100 pounds and won from, Frank Gill, 107, and Nealon, 115, with Go Between, W. H. Carey, Blandy. Ethon, Belle of Pequest, Dolly Spanker and Far West unplaced; distance, one and one-sixteenth miles and run in 1:151. July 5, Caboehou, carrying 1015 pounds to Ills 114, defeated-him in the Spindrift Stakes at Sheepshead Bay at a mile and an eighth in 1:53s. Ironsides, Gallavant and Red Leaf ran unplaced and the mile and a quarter was run in 2:05g. Since then .McCartcr lias not won. running unplaced to Ballot, Ironsides and Frank Gill in the Century Stakes at Sheepshead Bay and. to Brookdale Nymph, Dandelion and Old Honesty in the Omnium Handicap.
