KERNEL A DISAPPOINTING JUMPER. The steeplechaser. Kernel, that broke his neck in a fall at Montreal September 0, was one about which great expectations were entertained at one time, that were not realized. When a three-year-old In 1005, he won live flat races at New Orleans for Captain Sam Brown. Later on that year he was sold to J. W. Colt and put to jumping. In this line of racing he showed great aptitude and iu the fall won the Brandywine Steeplechase at Morris Park, a purse steeplechase at Plmlico, and the Junior Steeplechase at Bnnnhig. In this be gave such a coming crack as Herculold fourteen pounds and a beating, also defeating The Lad, The Miner, Oleroso and Dunseverrick. and it was thought by observers that he was destined to become a truly great steeplechaser. But It did not turn out that way. He was distinctly a disappointment in 1000, and only won twice that year, a purse and the Independence Steeplechase at Sheepshead Bay. This year he had won six races, but all were purses of minor importance, except the Curragli Steeplechase at Brighton Beach, in which he showed a glimpse of the form at one time hoped for from 1dm and won from Sheriff Williams, Jimmy Lane and Phantom. His record was as follows: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Amt. 1!05 3 22 S 4 2 8 $ 4,100 moo I 12 2 O 3 7 4.0SO 1007 ...i 5 10 . 0 0 1 ! 5.S00 Totals 30 10 4 0 24 4,700
