UNCLES HOLLY HANDICAP. HILDRETHS 0,000 BEAUTY WINS THE GRAVESEND FEATURE. He Was Only Winning Favorite King Cobalt, Guardian II., Sister Frances, Yankee Girl and Tipping Take Races. New York, September 2ii. There was a big drop lu the temieraturc overnight anil overcoats were in demand at Gravesend today. Clear skies reinforced by a brisk and chilly wind dried the track rapidly after last nights rain and the going could again lie properly described as cuppy. Uncle, S. C. Hfl.fl-reths recent 0,000 purchase, won the solitary stake feature on the card, the Holly Handicap, from Meelick, Lis quondam stable companion, after an exciting struggle which began with the first stride and ended only with the last. The race was practically confined to the Maddcn-bred pair throughout. Hildreth, the owner of the winner, complained that his colt was not treated fairly at the start, which was a moving one and caught bis jockey unprepared, also that K. Dugan had in addition bumped and carried Uncle out on the stretch turn with Meelick and that the double contretemps bad. seriously jeopardized Uncles chance of victory. In any event, Hildreths colt finished on the extreme outside of the track and had his work cut out to score at the end of a long, closing drive, luring which the result was in doubt until almost the last stride or two. Experts were not highly impressed by Uncles prowess after the race and no one would now dream of classing him -with Colin, nor even witli J. R. Keenes brilliant second string, Celt. The start in the Holly Handicap was the first of the walklug-up kind that Cassidy has indulged himself in this season, and there was much surprise manifested therein by the horsemen and trainers present. In justice to the starter, however, it can be said that Finn on Uncle pulled up instead of. going on as the others did. Few .perceived it, however. For the first time in the history of the Jockey Club rule in New York, have bets been declared off on a race, and fifteen minutes additional time allowed for making Iwok in the ring. This was practically the case in the fifth race. Retting had progressed for nearly ten minutes, when it was announced that Right Royal, who hail been officially posted as a starter, was not at the track and would not start. As a matter of fact, the Lazarus horse had been scratched in ample time, but the man whose duty It was to make this known had neglected to do so. John J. Cavanagli, manager of the letting ring, acting on his own responsibility, de-dared bets off. and allowed additional time for betting. It was a popular and sensible move. The withdrawal of Right Royal left only two starters. Beacon Light and Yankee Girl, to contest for the ,500 purse. Those who had expected that Beacon Light would 10 an overwhelming favorite in the betting were completely flabbergasted by the panicky condition of the market. The odds against the Headley horse went, back steadily with no takers, notwithstanding that the purveyors of odds were frantically shouting. There were only a skittered few who Wanted to. bet on the crack handicap horse. It was just the reverse with Yankee Girl. Everybody wanted to bet on her, but a majority of the bookmakers didnt want to lay against her at any price. Sam Hildreths 0,000 colt Uncle may be unable to outrun Colin or Celt, but in the Holly Handicap at Gravesend this afternoon he brought back a part of his purchase price and showed that he easily holds the second raters of his age safe. Uncle was well ridden by Finn aud after waiting oh Meelick to the stretch turn, challenged and near the end of a game head and head drive, drew oat and won by a clear length. Meelick is a good, game colt and ran a good race, but met his master today. Spooner showed evidence of returning to good form by outstaying Belmonts good filly Half Sovereign for third place. King Cobalt and The Squire furnished an interesting struggle in the first race. The result was between the two from start to finish witli Kjng Cobalt hold lug a slight advantage at all stages and having a scant length the best of it at the end. Arasee was a distant third. Gold-quest was coming on with a useless rush at the end. It was Guardian II.s going today and. fencing perfectly and running with great freedom, he scored all the way in the steeplechase, easily withstanding it tesolute challenge from Paprika. Garrett and Essex II. were strongly backed choices and finished head arid head with Paprika. So they can hardly be accused of performing badly. Sister Frances, long overdue, at last won, but In a tight fit and at a long price. Lady Anne, with Miller up. was a hot favorite, but gave up to SUt,er Frances at the end of a sharp stretch drive. Another long shot from the west. Algelone, was a bangUP third. The deceitful Handzarra got off with a rush and led easily to the stretch, then shut up aud finished far back. Her racing this year is unaccountably bad, and it may be she -will forget to quit one of these days to the great depletion of the bookmakers hank accounts. All- hut two were ecratched from the fifth ..race and Yankee Girl won all the way from the odds-on favorite Beacon" Light. The Ellison filly has been running poorlv for some time bnck and has been supposed to be out of form. Today, with good weight up, she ran a mile and a quarter over a Slow track in 2:074-. quite a stunning performance to those who thought site had no chance. The fleet, but uncertain Tipping disused of a hot favorite in Zipango in the mile and an eighth dash that was the last race of the day. Blandy led foi4 aimlle,. but was short and failed to stay the route. This horse Is good and likely to score soon.
