I i I a i J l n a j r 1 j 1 J 1 : . i ! SHILLINGS .DAY AT LATONIA. Cincinnati, O., October 7. Disagreeable weather kept all but tlie hardened regulars away from La-tonia today. Tlie track, as a result of tlie rains, was again muddy. The steeplechase was run in blinding rainstorm and grave fears existed that most of tlie starters would not negotiate the course successfully. Blue Pirate, on which McClure had the mount, his lirst since his suspension last June, won all tlie way from Full of Fun. With better handling Pete Vinegar would have given tlie winner stout argument. W. K. Slade. ridden by Wick-line, slipped approaching tlie seventh hedge and his rider was unseated. The lirst three races were made spirited by the clever riding of Shilling, who piloted inferior horses to victory. In tlie opener he had the mount on Merrick, "favorite. Refined was best, but under a persevering liile Shilling downed her in the last stride. The recently purchased ,0M Cenre Shot was considered best in tlie second, but again Shilling out generaled the other riders and took the purse with Miss Sain, a former stable mate of Centre Shot. Bustle also profited by I.ycurgus allowing Centre Shot to swerve in the last few strides, and this enabled the Vila filly to take second place. On Dainty Dame in the third Shilling had to ride his best to head out Frontenac in the closing strides, after tlie latter appeared a certain winner. Warner Griswell. at a long price, took the fifth after Black Fox. the early pacemaker, had swerved badly and sharply impeded several in the lield. Tlie showing of Toboggan, the receding favorite, was a poor one, and he will do much better on a. fast track, when the chances of his bandages becoming less saturated will materially aid him to become less leg weary. Prytanias victory was accomplished enly after considerable humping and swerving, tlie Clansman suffering sufficiently in the estimation of a number to warrant the prediction that he would have won but for the interference. Lady Vie disposed of her opponents in tlie fifth race in handy fashion, hut was aided by tlie best racing luck. Jockev Minder was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post while at the post for the lirst race.
