AN OLD-TIME STAYER. The most remarkable instance of stamina in the history of the American turf was that of John . Stevens Black Maria, a long lifetime ago. in October, 1SJJ2, Black Maria won a race of four-mile heats over the Union Course on Long Island, in which five heats were necessary to achieve victory. Over a heavy track this wonderful mare won the first heat, dead-heated the second, was second in the third, second in the fourth aud won the fifth, running a total distance of twenty miles. Black Maria was on the turf six years; started twenty-live times and won thirteen races. Eleven of her contests were three and four-mile heats.
