NOTES OF THE TURF. J. J. Nagle, who has been racing in Texas, is on his way to Oakland with his string. Trainer John Huggins, of the II. B. Dnryea stable, has left New York for a visit to his farm in Texas. James Kowe lias deserted his charges at Sheepshead Bay for a few days and will pay a visit to relatives in Toledo, Ohio. A night school for stable lwys has been inaugurated at Sheepshead Bay. Two rooms are used, one being set aside for colored boys. Jockey W. Knapp lias arrived at Los Angeles from c Oakland and denies the report tltat lie was married shortly before leaving San Francisco. Emll nerz is busily operating "on the ground" at Oakland and making plenty of action about iiim, but from all accounts Is not gathering much of a bankroll. J. C. Schmuck and James Crooks are two Canadian turfmen who will spend the winter at Los Angeles. They expect to put on a book in the ring within a few days. The chestnut filly by St. Gatien Turmoil, from J the Hildreth stable, -which ruptured a blood vessel in her shoulder while working on the track at Oakland Thursday, has been destroyed. John E. Madden has shipped twenty horses, including Salvidere, from Sheepshead Bay to Kenning, where they will be wintered, together with eighteen head now at. the Washington Jockey Club course. James II. McCormick lias had a couple of houses built on Neck Road at Sheepshead Bay and will occupy one of them next year. He is not wintering any horses at the track, all of them being in New Orleans. James McLaughlin lias returned to Gravesend from Benniug with the horses which he handled during the Washington meeting. He will probably hot race his horses at New Orleans owing to the illness of his wife. W. C. Daly has shipped his horses from Wsi"S-ton to Gravesend, where they will rest up for a few weeks before shipping to Hot Springs, if Daly finally decides to go south. He Is spending a few weeks at his Connecticut farm near Hartford. R. T. Offutt has shipped fourteen horses to Los Angeles from Oakland for racing at the new track. Offutt has tenyearliugs at Ascot Park, which were bred at the breeding farm of Samuel Watkins at Petersburg, 111., and are by the two sires, Peter McCue and Nimrod.
