J I i j i : ; SANTA ANITA TRACK A SCORCHER. Lisaro Runs a Mile Over It in 1:37 4-5, Breaking the California Record. Los Angeles, Cal., December 17. The excellent racing here today was emphasized by the brilliant victory of Lisaro. which ran a mile in 1:37$, beating out Acrobat in a driving finish by the shortest of margins. Horsemen here are enthusiastic over the track and firmly believe that the first high-class horse that races over it will run a mile inside of 1:87. Persistent rumors have been circulated lately hinting that the distance is short, but the management sturdily denies this, and to disabuse the minds of those who, have expressed, such aniopinion have had the track carefully measured at least three times. The distauces are absolutely correct. The soil has. a wonderful cushion on it and is springy. The commonest selling platers run six furlongs in less than 1:18. It is confidently expected that a number of American records will be broken before the meeting comes to a close. Secretary E. 0. Smith presented one of the best cards of the meeting today, the result being a splendid afternoons sport, witnessed by the largest" crowd of the week. P. T. Chinn thought so little of General Haleys chances in the first race that he dissuaded his friends from getting aboard, but the General was in a running mood, winning a sharply contested race from Lady Vashti with the juicy odds of 15 to 1 chalked up against him. Niblick, the favorite in this race, was well backed by the eastern contingent, but ran one of his dull races. The speculation is fast settling Into normal conditions, and as George Rose and "Cad" Doggett are holding forth, all the big bettors are being accommodated.
