MEMPHIS POOLROOM MEN WEAKEN. Memphis. Tenn.. January 9.— The anuounced at -leiniit to test the Amis auti-bettiug law on races 7 through the medium of having bets regislered in a j pool 1 1 xiiii in Chittenden County, Arkansas, directly across the Mississippi river from this city, failed today when sheriff I,ewis, acting on orders received . from attorney general Kirby, visited the rooms this 1 afternoon to find them deserted. The room had been ■ in operation for the past three days and bets were accepted on the New Orleans races. The step taken by sheriff liewis was to make .1 est case of the Amis law, but the threat of the state officials to call out the militia, if necessary. is said to have caused the poolroom people to change their plans. I
