Cal., January 20. — Jake Holtuiau made a bad mess of the start in the last race at Oakland today and the crowd hissed him vigorously. He called to the ten starters to come on. sudden ly chauged his mind, waved them back with voice ami gesture, then iu the next breath yelled to them again to go on. but forgot to spring the barrier. Only three. Lord Filigrane, Jack Paine and Lakeview. got away well, the others either pulling up or standing with their heads over the tape. The two favorites, Catherine F. anil Crystal Wave, were in the last -named category and practically eliminated as contenders. Holtman. out iu the pelting rain, stood quite still for a long time, a picture of dejection. A. G. Blakeleys Lord Filigrane. with Miller up. won a handy victory at good odds. J. Dinkelspitd Iwosted the winner from «M to .I00. and Blakeley cheerfully let his horse go at that price. . The card was excellent, but contained no stake features. The fourth race at seven furlongs, however, attracted a high-class field. Eight of the best horses in local training participated. Geiu-mell. which, in his preceding two starts was badly heaten ami seemingly unable to raise a common gallop, was todav plunged Upon with extr nie confidence anil at post time no better than the ridiculously short price of 7 to 5 was obtainable about him. The result fully justified the confidence of the bushwhacking brigade, as Gemniell wou like a 1 to 10 chance. Grace G., the receding favorite, was held at the post by the whipper-in and virtually left. It Is doubtful, however, if Soules filly could have even exercised the winner on this occasion.
