Cal., March 19.— Phil Chinn and his friends won heavily on the victory of Pretension today. The gelding acted stubbornly at the post and was the cause of a tedious delay. The race resolved itself into a stretch duel lietween him and Colonel Bob. but Pretension proved the gamer in the closing strides. Mr. Chinn tried to repeat with Chal-fonte in the next race, but the best the horse could do was to run third. Old Silverskin was at his best today and turned the track in 1:40 and easily beat a fair band in the last race. He was the medium of a coup and his victory caused a big loss to the twenty-one books doing business. Oallavant was a pronounced favorite to win the third race and never left the result in doubt. Buster J nes attempted to keep pace with the winner, but found it too strenuous and was beaten for third place by Matador. Jockey Ross finally won another race when Da- ruma led Smirker and Chalfonte to the wire in the fifth. The winner ran the distance in her pre- vious start in 1 :::9. hut was not forced to do her best today, running the mile in 1:39». The condition of trainer H. S. Newman, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident last Sun- day. is much improved, and it is expected that he will be alxrtit in a few days.
