Cal., March 19.— Phil Chinn and his friends won heavily on the victory of Pretension today. The gelding acted stubbornly at the post and was the cause of a tedious delay. The race resolved itself into a stretch duel lietween him and Colonel Bob. but Pretension proved the gamer in the closing strides. Mr. Chinn tried to repeat with Chal-fonte in the next race, but the best the horse could do was to run third. Old Silverskin was at his best today and turned the track in 1:40 and easily beat a fair band in the last race. He was the medium of a coup and his victory caused a big loss to the twenty-one books doing business. Oallavant was a pronounced favorite to win the third race and never left the result in doubt. Buster J nes attempted to keep pace with the winner, but found it too strenuous and was beaten for third place by Matador. Jockey Ross finally won another race when Da- ruma led Smirker and Chalfonte to the wire in the fifth. The winner ran the distance in her pre- vious start in 1 :::9. hut was not forced to do her best today, running the mile in 1:39». The condition of trainer H. S. Newman, who was seriously injured in an automobile accident last Sun- day. is much improved, and it is expected that he will be alxrtit in a few days. Bookmaker Jack Atkin has withdrawn from the ring and will hack them from the ground during the rest of the meeting. He says he will spend the summer making a tour of Europe.
