IMPROVEMENT AT LATONIA GOOD WEATHER AND A DRYINGOUT TRACK BRING ABOUT WELLCONTESTED RACING Kerchcval Defeats The Minks in the Principal Race of the Day Apache Outruns Czar and Chulita Cincinnati O June 4 Todays racing at Lalonia resulted in frequent upsets Not a single favorite landed in front except Anne fcGee and it was a close call for her Poor riding and deceptive track conditions were responsible for this Racegoers had expected to find the track muddy and based their calculations on that belief By dint of constant harrowing the track was whipped into fair condition by the time the first race was called that Is it was dry enough on top to afford safe footing But underneath It was dead and soggy and there were several soft places In It along the backstretch Under these circumstances excellent time was made In the different races Clearing weather and an ex ¬ cellent program witli a mile handicap as a feature drew out n fairly large attendance It was a good betting card and the volume of speculation showed improvement over that of yesterday the take being highly satisfactory to the management The finishes were close in all the races racesTiie Tiie Minks was made are overwhelming favorite in the mile handicap over Kercheval despite the latters good showing at Louisville That the latter was clearly ibest was evidenced today for Kerchcval was away In a tangle and many lengths in the rear whereas The Minks broke with an ad ¬ vantage The speedy Zal set a fast pace closely attended by Mortiboy to the stretch turn where Tim Minks moved into command hut under strong urging Kerchcval closed a big gap and finishing gamely through the stretch won by a halt length Zal again showed early speed but tired fast after going threequarters enabling Mortiboy to take third place without much effort The principal upset came in the closing race when Chulita was beaten out by Apache and Czar During the early iacing Powers appeared to ho trying to force Apache to run out by keeping Cliulltn close to him and forcing him wide These tactics caused the Labold filly to tire fast when approaching the stretch turn and Apache gamely dashed Into the lead and stayed just long enough to stall off the fastcoming Czar CzarJockey Jockey Kdmlston threw away the purse In the opening race on E T Shlpp Garters winning by a small margin Hughes In the second led through ¬ out and easily downed Hostile Hyphen which had been the closest contender throughout throughoutBarney Barney Schreihers Sainward was away with an advantage in the third race that the others could not overcome and she won after a mild drive to out ¬ stay Malocon MaloconJockey Jockey Ilufham who was injured by a fall In a steeplechase at Louisville and considered seriously hurt was at the track showing slight signs of his recent injuries He will go to Canada where lie will ride rideMilton Milton Young who was in California during tho winter was among todays visitors He stated that W Walsh Is the greatest lightweight rider in the country countryA A Bellow and S S Tracy arrived today from New Orleans each with four horses and F S Kelly came in from Nashville with six
