MUDDY TRACK AT FORT ERIE MANY WITHDRAWALS BECAUSE OF THE RAIN BUT RACING IS SATISFACTORY Jolly Runs Poorly in the Going and Is Unplaced La Veita Wins the Steeplechase i 3aUa Destroyed i Buffalo N Y August 5 The heavy rains of last night put the track in bad condition and caused many withdrawals from the different races The feature a purse race at threequarters in which four speedy sprinters were slated to start had to be declared off on account of the withdrawal of Berwick and Apache Threatening weather caused a decrease in the attendance but the speculation was up to the standard and the twentyfour layers were kept busy Favorites fared well capturing three of the purses pursesThe The steeplechase had for starters five poorly con ¬ sidered ones but La Veita and Little Wally which finished first and second respectively furnished a rousing contest both running in close order through ¬ out and takinr some of the obstacles at the same time In the stretch La Veita drew out to win handily After the finish jockey Dayton who had the mount on Little Wally lodged a protest claim ¬ ing that Archibald on La Veita had Impeded his mount in the final furlong The complaint was not sustained Impertinence and Chancellor failed to finish The latter bolted at the seventh hedge and Impertinence unseated her rider by stumbling at the same lump Jolly lumpJolly which had been running impressively in his last three races was thought to have the sixth race at his mercy but furnished a big surprise In failing to land a place Theo Cook taking the purse from Alice Madrileno third The judges were not satis lied with the effort of E Martin on Jolly and gave him a sharp lecture for his listless ride The colt however clearly showed that he could not rim freely in the difficult going Quagga goingQuagga at a short price was an easy winner over Hostile Hyphen This pair had the race prac ¬ tically between them throughout W H Flzer won his first purse of the meeting when Floreal took the opener from Malecon and Salnister T Klley uncorked a good thing In the closing race when his Anneta Lady won as her rider pleased Jockey J Butler carried off the riding honors by piloting three winners winnersBarney Barney Schrelber will leave shortly for Saratoga for stayAs a brief stay As a result of the injury sustained by Balla In the fifth race yesterday when she was jumped on and almost had her tendon severed it was found necessary to destroy her herGoes Goes Fast which was carded to start in the clos ¬ ing race was ordered withdrawn on account of not being eligible to the race J raceJ W May arrived today from Saratoga with Marbles Please and Patriot Jockeys PatriotJockeys Powers and NIcol will leave at the close of this meeting for Montreal where they will ride
