N0TASULGA AND M0LLIE MONTROSE. Last year when two-year-old racing came on at New Orleans it was not long until two fillies singled mt from the others of their age and by the real merit of their achievements attracted general attention and awakened expectations of distiuguishei careers. Thev were Mollie Montrose and Notasulga Mollie Montrose won eig straight races at New Orleans and in their course ran three and one-hal furlongs in 41 seconds with 1101 pounds up: a haP nib. in :47? with 110. and four and one-half fur .ongs in :54? with 11S. Notasulga won three races-it New Orleans, a purse- the National Stakes and the Louisiana Stakes, and was then taken to New York. Here she won the Bose Stakes and Canarsh Stakes at the Aqueduct spring meeting, the Dais: Stakes and the Bosebuds Stakes at Sheepshead Ba: and several purses, easily defeating such good ono-as Cohort. Meggs Hill. Nimbus. Half Sovereign. James B. Brady. Park View and others rcpresentinp excellent winning form. Mollie Montrose had an at tack of sickness and was retired from racing in Maraud Notasulga met with an accident and was raced but little after the Sheepshead Bay summer meeting. It was supposed that these fillies would come out as three-year-olds this year and repeat the brilliant racing that wo;i them renown as two-year-olds. Yet. two more complete failures would be bard to instance. Against no kind of opposition has either been able to win a race. It is a striking illustration of tlie complete and inexplicable loss of speed that now and then overcomes a naturally good horse in tho space of but a few short months. The contrast iu their records as two-year-olds and three-year-olds is astonishing and is here given: Notasulga. Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp.
