TRAINING RESUMED AT OAKLAND. San Francisco. Cal.. October 31. S. C. Hildreth has arranged for jockey McCarthy to do his light- weight riding next winter. McCarthy will come to California at tlie close of the Pimlico meeting. Lawrence P. Daley will not start in the Opening Handicap trainer Rector announces. Rector believes the horse needs freshening up after his strenuous eastern campaign. U. L. Thomas arrived at Los Angeles today and will come here witli jockey Shilling within the next few days. Bookmaker W. R. Engstrom got in from the east yesterday. T. P. ITayes has entered Redgaiintlet in the longdistance stakes to be run here and the presumption is that he contemplates a California campaign. A story sent out from Reno to the effect that T. n. Williams is seeking a twenty-five year charter for a racing enterprise in Nevada is without foundation in fact. The population of Reno and other nearby places is insufficient to support racing on anything but an exceedingly limited scale. Training was resumed at Oakland today. Sewcll furnished the star performance by working five furlongs in 1:02?. Considering that the track was decidedly slow this was excellent. Sewell will not start in the Opening Handicap, but will go in sprints with purse conditions during the early days of the meeting. Hildreth worked Restlgouche six furlongs iu 1:18ft, the first work- o any account that he has asked of the horse since his arrival. Several Opening Handicap candidates, including Montgomery, were sent slow miles.
