The imported mare Scandal, to which Maranul traces, was a daughter of The Libel and Tiranna bred in Belgium, by Inheritor, out of Eloisa. by Etnilius. There, Is now residing at Ascot Richard Morton, who for many years traveled to the various meetings as a race horse plater, and was a; contemporary of the late Ben Land when meetings" were held, at Reading. Oxford. Egham and other places which have now dropped out of the fixture list. He celebrates his eighty-sixth birthday tomorrow, and except for failing eyesight the veteran, who is in the care of his son, is very well. Mortonsi father put the plates on Zinganee when that colt won the Ascot Gold Cup for. Lord Chesterfield as long ago as 1S29. In the early eighties the trouble which brought about the dispersal of the Middle Park Stud enabled Auckland, New Zealand, to secure a mare that was destined to earn fame as the dam of one of the greatest horses that ever carried silk. This "was the Knowsley mare. Mersey, which threw Carbine to Musket at Sylvia Park in the spring of 1SS5. On the day that the Middle Park Stud went to auction in 18S0 Sir Hercules Robinson held commissions to buy for the Auckland Stud Company, and the chestnut daughter of Knowsley and Clemence- was one that took the eye of the ex-governor of New Zealand. Little did those present at the ringside at Kent on that bleak December afternoon dream that a great prize was in front of them when Mersey was led into the inclosure, for Sir Hercules Robinson had only to bid 150 guineas to secure the mare destined to win undying fame in the Antipodes. Truly, the wind blew favorably for Auckland and the colonlat turf the day that Mersey was knocked down to Sir Hercules Robinson.
