The Newmarket First Spring meeting is in progress, with the Two Thousand Guineas to he run toilay and the One Thousand on Fridav afternoon. At latest advices no betting market about tlu- •Guineas" had been established although considerable wagering over the Derby has taken place. While not comprising all of the field, training and racing apetattaaa so far have led to the expectation that the following three-vear-olds will be among those that will go to the post for the Two Thousand ihis afternoon: Mr. Fairies h. c. Leniberg. bv Cvllene — Gallcia. Lord Bosebcrys eh. c, Neil Cow. hy Marco— helandr.v. Mr. Peddingtons eh. c. Magic, hv Martagon — Sesame. J. Buchanans h. c. Tressady. hv Persimmon — Simplify. W. M. Cazalets b. o. San Antonio, hv Persimmon — -Lady Linton. A. P. Cnnliffes b. c. Charles OMallev, hv Desmond — Goody -Two-Shoes. Lord Durhams b. c, Roi-hester. hv Rock Sand-Caparison. Maj. Whitneys ch. c. Whisk Broom, bv Broom stick — Audience. II. P. Whitneys ch. c. New Castle, hv Meddler— Homespun. II. P. Whitneys eh. c. Witchwork. bv Broomstick — Sallie of Navarre. Last year these were undoubtedly the best two year-olds that ran in Hngland. with" the premiership a matter of controversy In-tween the respective partisans of Neil Cow mini Ix-mlierg. ■with Admiral Hawke generally placed next best. What the prn-tession-il betttatr element thinks of the matter is shown by the fact lliat in the F.psom Derby betting. I/cmlK-rg has been steadUv the favorite at ."■ to 1. Inl II a couple of weeks back Neil Cow was second choice at an unvarying 4 to 1. then, odillv enough. he went up to M to 1 directly after he had made his first start and won his first race of this vear. This was in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket April 14. He was an odds-on. favorite and finally won by three lengths from Whisk Broom, but only lie cause Tressady took a notion to bolt across the track when In- had the race safely won. It was a matter of comment that neither Neil Cow nor Whisk Broom was wound up to concert pitch and bath could l.e 1 much improved by Two Thousand dav. If thev u.i to the |m.sI 1-mherg and Admiral Hawke will lie 1 making their first start of the year todav. Barfed has it that they have bolh improved ami grown into magnificent young thoroughbreds. Rochester ran I-in berg to a head last year and won his onlv start this year in such fashion that •! will not lie at all strange If he wins todav. All of Mr. Whltaejr* i-amlidates 1 Btarted at the Craven meeting. Whisk Broom finish nig second in his race and New Castle third in his. ; while Witchwork was unplaced in bis only essav, hut a close-up fourth iu good company. 1
