MUD RUNNERS GET CHANCE AFTER LONG SPELL OF FAST GOING. RAIN TRANSFORMS JUAREZ COURSE. Much Scratching Follows Change in Track Conditions and Declaring: Off of One Race Became Necessary Cantem Wins Handicap. El Paso, Tex., February IS. For the first time in many weeks, horses with a fancy for soft going were given their chance at Juarez today. There was a heavy downpour of rain during the night and the course was rendered heavy and holding for this afternoons racing. There was considerable scratching and the third race was so depleted thereby that it was declared off and a substitute provided in the shape of a selling affair at live-eighths of a mile for horses three years old and over. Maud McKee. backed from 10 to 1 to 0 to 1. won the opening dash by a nose from General Warren, which bad supplanted Compton in favoritism. Tyree, which had been backed into favoritism in the second race, lost to luid Nunc, one of the receding choices, by a head. The others in this race were badly beaten off. The substituted race was won by Ida Lavinia. a well-supported favorite. She came from far back to beat the pacemaker, Thistle Belle. The mile handicap that served as the days feature, was won by the lighlly-weighted Cantem, the extreme outsider in the betting. He was ridden by jockey llaynes and, leading from start to finish, won by as far as his rider pleased from Just Bed, the closing favorite. Dr. G. M. Miller of Detroit has purchased from Henry McDaniel the two-year-old colt For Fair for a private consideration. Dr. Miller owns Luther, which has raced creditably here. Jockey A. Claver, under a suspension of twenty days, has decided not to remain until the close of the meeting as he had originally intended. He will leave tonight for Toronto to join the stable of Robert Davies, his new contract employer. Recent work-outs of horses in training at Juarez were as follows: Anytime Seven-eighths in l:.i5.
