BEEHIVE WINS THE PLATE HARRY GIDDINGS CRACK THREE-YEAR-OLD EASY VICTOR IN TORONTO FEATURE. Tremendous Turnout at Woodbine for Opening of Canadian Racing Season — ffactics Takes Minto Stakes. Toronto. I! was one of the largest crowds that ever attended ihe races in Canada, the occasion was a brilliant one. It marked tin- opening of the Ontario Jockey Clubs spring meeting and incidentally the beginning ot the racing season in Canada for the seasou of lblt. Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Connanght, and Princess Patricia and Prince Arthur, attended in state and the club members en closure was packed to give them greeting. Both the npper ami lower tiers of the immense new grandstand were crowded and the overflow made them selves as comfortable as possible on the lawns. Tin- day was a perfect one for outdoor sport and Ibe track proper had been honed down until it was lightning last. A majorit] of the races furnished keen con-lists and in several of them heads separated the first lv, o al the end. Interest centered in the running of tlie Kings Plate. There were eight starters, with three of them coupl-d as the .Seagram entry. Porcupine was an added starter. Beehive was an overwhelming favorite, as he was entitled lo Ih- on his record and trials. He was ridden by Guy Burns, made all of his own pace and won easily, although his rider was forced to shake him up a bit in entering the homestretch, where Dark Rosaleen made a delcrmineil effort. The field was pretty well strung out at the end, with Porcupine last. Tlie Minto Slakes, the Aintree Steeplechase snal the William .Unlock Cup were some of the other St tractions. Juntas Arthur was decidedly in the liiinlignl during the afternoon. Be saddled three of the winners Stalwart Helen, which won the two year old race; Tactics, winner of the Minto Slakes, ami Cold Cap. which won the closing dash Tin. finish lor the steeplechase was one of the closest ever run through the lield here.
