I THE UNACCOUNTABLE RACING FAILURE OF THE PRESENT TEAR 8 , , 4, Absolutely the most striking racing disappointment of the present year was that furnished by the stable belonging to James Butler. It is no uncommon thing for a good two-year-old to cut up badly" as a three-year-old, but here was a seemingly exceptionally strong stable of many two-year-olds, not one of which fulfilled the promise of its two-year-old days. High Noon came closest to doing so, but even he only e qualified as a sprinter. Those splendid two-year-olds, Pebbles and Comely, were rank failures as three-year-olds and the unbeaten Last Coin could not even be brought to the post for a race. Of course there is reason for all this, but racing stables guard the stable secrets grimly and it may never be told why Mr. Butlers big band of Castleton-bred hopes failed as a whole, in comparison with reasonable expectations. Iast year the Butler stable, then wholly made up of two-year-olds, won 0,123 and placed him second to W, Schorr in the list of winning owners. This year that same baud won collectively the comparatively trivial total of 2,929, leaving the remainder of the stables total to be accounted for by its two-year-olds this year. The record of the stable was: Horse. Col. and Sex. A. Pedigree. 1st. 2d. 3d.
