* A 4. LONG-PRICED WINNERS DURING 1916 THAT HANDSOMELY REWARDED THEIR FORTUNATE BACKERS 4 + To Welga belongs the distinction, such as it is. of being the longest-priced winner of the racing of 1916. This she gained in a race at the Douglas Park spring meeting, when her tickets returned 279 to 1 in the mutuels. The only other winner at over 200 to 1 was Sad Sam, which near the close of the year surprised the folks at Juarez when he scored at 221 to 1. In the course of the year eight other horses won at 100 to 1 or more, but less than 200 to 1. All of these satisfactory returns were made in mutuel betting.
