The first three fences were cat down slightly in order to enable the field to settle down before the more formidable obstacles were reached. On the other band, the land beyond Bet chers Brash was ploughed, and this had to lie traversed twice. The third fence was moved fifty yards closer to the fourth, hut tin- fences were wider than before. The fallowing details of the various jumps enable one to realize that it takes a cross country horse of the highest calilicr to succeed in this great event : 1 and 17— Thorn fence brushed, 4 ft. 6 in. Mgh, 1 ft. wide. 2 and In- Thorn fence fir, 4 ft. 7 in. high, 3 ft. !» in. wiit . 3 and 19— Thorn fence brushed. 4 ft. 11 in. Mgh, 4 ft. wide, with ditch on take off side fi ft. wide, 2 ft. deep, banked up to guard rail 1 ft. ! in. high in front of ditch. 4 and M Thorn fence spruce, 4 ft. 10 in. high. 4 ft. wide. 5 and 21 — Thorn fence brushed, 4 ft. 10 in. high, 3 ft. 9 in. wide. 0 and 22 — "Beehors Brook." a thorn fence packed with fir, 4 ft. 7 in. high, 3 ft. 3 in. wide, with a natural brook on far side 6 ft. wide. 7 and 23 — Thorn fence brushed, 4 ft. 11 in. high, 3 ft. 9 in. wide. S and 24 — The "Canal turn." a thorn fence brushed. 4 ft. 10 in. high. 3 ft. 9 in. wide, ditch on take-off side 0 ft. wide. • ft. deep, hanked up to guard rail 1 ft. «i in. high in front of ditch. 9 and 2.1 -•Valentines Brook, a thorn fence fir, 4 ft. 9 in. high. 3 ft. 0 in. wide, a natural brook on far side i ft. I in. wide. 10 and 20— Thorn fence brushed, 4 ft. 10 in. high, 3 ft. 9 in. wide. 11 and 27 — Thorn fence brushed. 4 ft. 11 in. high. 3 ft. 0 in. wide, ditch on take-off side i; ft. wide. 2 ft.- deep, banked to guard rail 1 ft. 0 in. high in front of ditch. 12 and 2X— Thorn fence fir. 4 ft. 7 in. high, 3 ft. 0 in. wide, ditch on far side 7 ft. wide, 3 ft. deep. 13 and 29 — Thorn fence spruce, 4 ft. 6 in. high, 3 ft. 3 in. wide. 14 and 30— Thorn fence brushed, 4 ft. 6 in. high, 3 ft. wide. 15 — The "Open Ditch." n thorn fence packed with cypressus. 5 ft. high. 3 ft. 6 in. wide, ditched on take-off side 0 ft. wide. 2 ft. deep and banked to guard rail 1 ft. 0 in. high in front of ditch. 16 — The "Water Jump," 10 ft. wide, with thorn fence brushed, 3 ft. 1 in. high, 2 ft. 9 in. wide. The full distance is about four miles and 856 yard!; the distance from the start to the first fence 546 yards, and the run in is 494 yards.
