GOOD FOUR -YEAR -OLDS IN SIGHT Johren, Sun Briar, "War Cloud, Exterminator, Jack Hare Jr., Motor Cop, Sunny Slope and Others. NEW YORK. N. Y., January 29. When the entries come out for the spring handicaps In this section an attractlverband-.oYfxtl!i.-oldtf- will be among them, possibly the bestjiorses. of that age that has been seen in years. There are at least eight which can be cited that would make a good race among themselves, but with the addition of the older horses it is reasonable to presume the fields will be of high class. Taking them in the order of their money winning last year, there will be Johren, Exterminator, War Cloud. Jack Hare Jr.. Motor Cop. Sunny Slope. The Porter, Sun Briar and possibly Flags. Inlcss something goes wrong with these it can safely be predicted that the major part of them will be nominated in such races as the Metropolitan, Excelsior, Suburban, Brooklyn and other handicaps of less consequence. Last year there were but Cudgel, Omar Khayyam, Hollister and Westy Hogan in the four-year-old division which could be called high class horses, Hourless having gone wrong before he could be taken to the races. Omar Khayyam was never himself during the year, and lie was soon eliminated from the list of contenders, and while Hollister is a good horse he was always. at the mercy of Cudgel and Westy Hogan. Consequently the list of this years four-year-olds shines brightly in both quality and quantity. They may not be good enough to beat either Cudgel or Westy Hogan when the time arrives for the contests, but in matching horss for horse Cudgel can be compared to Sun Briar. Johren and War Cloud can readily be compared with Westy Hogan. though War Cloud would have to be guaranteed a fast track, which is against him as a money earner. Hence there are at the least two four-year-olds of this year that compare favorably with the stars of last year in that division. In reviewing the five-year-olds that will be entered in the richer of the handicaps there are Cudgel, Naturalist, Hollister, Midway, Corn Tassel, Omar Khayyam and possibly one or two lesser lights. Consequently the handicaps will appear promising for a contest of more than ordinary importance. Should Roamer come back it will add ! to the complexity, and when Mr. Vosburgh has applied his thoughts to the group in regard to what they shall carry, picking the winner will be a hard problem to solve. The only hope is that Sun Briar will be sent out again to add greater things to his already enviable record, and that Johren will return to the course in a much sounder condition that when he retired. The same can be said of Jack Hare Jr. There is little question that Exterminator will be carded, also War Cloud, Sunny Slope and The Porter. SANDY McNAUGHTON QUITE CONFIDENT. Sandy McNaughton. the trainer of Omar Khayyam and Westy Hogan. is convinced that his pair will be on hand, as both are going on satisfactorily in their winter surroundings. With any kind of luck the bigger handicaps of this year will have entry lists of more than ordinary caliber, there being at least a dozen horses in sight that can be termed high class. If the question were put, Which one is likely to prove the best sprinter of the four-year-olds V Sun Briar might lie the choice. Both as a two-year-old and three-year-old he displayed marvelous speed on several occasions. His trainer, Henry Mc-Daniels, has frequently remarked that Sun Briar is the fastest horse he ever trained or saw. He ought to know. At the same time Jack Hare Jr. and Motor Cop must not be overlooked. These two have plenty of early speed, and Walter Jennings intimates he has a horse in War Cloud that can outfoot any mans horse on a fast track. Johren has never been highly tried for early speed in public, hence his sprinting qualifications are not known by the multitude; yet he might be the equal of any of those mentioned. There is no question that Flags is a lightning fast horse, but there is a question whether he would hold on as long as such horses as Sun Briar, War Cloud, Motor Cop and Jack Hare Jr. Exterminator, Sunny Slope and The Porter are certainly long route horses, though Sunny Slope might show great speed iu a sprint race if trained for that purpose. In a race like the Toboggan Handicap it "would be hard to determine which would prove the best of the four-year-olds it all were in good condition and trained especially for such an event.
