DERBY CANDIDATE TRUANT IS SPEEDY LOUISVILLE Ky April S Truant a shapely foreignbred colt by Day Comet a son of St Frus quin dam Pure Lily by Martagon a prospective starter In the Kentucky Derby gave the work watchers at Churchill Downs something to comment on when he worked fiveeighths in 102 the speedi ¬ est trial at the distance recorded by any locally trained Derby eligible this season The colt was ridden by jockey W Lilley and galloped out the threequarters in 110 He ran the eighth in 11 quarter in 23 threeeighths in 35 and the half in 48Mi with fully 120 pounds on his back The colt is the property of Nat F Dortch u Louisville tobacco merchant who secured him last fall from F H Brunell the Chicago publisher He lias never yet faced the barrier in a race His training under the care of J L Paul is progressing satis ¬ factorily and while the colt is possessed of fine early speed his ability to race over a long distance of ground is yet to be determined determinedMr Mr Dortch has another one of which lift expects much tliis season This is the threeyearold filly Ornella T which is being prepared to start in the Kentucky Oaks This filly is a sister to Charlie Eastman and while she showed little as a two yearold she nevertheless gives promise of dis ¬ playing better form this year yearMr Mr Dortch who is interested in the Adelbert Stud near Hopkinsville was apprised that his mare Squeedaddle had foaled a fine filly by Zeus Squee daddles dam is Mamie B by St Blaise and was purchased by Mr Dortch at the Haggin dispersal sale for 1000 the mare at the time being in foal to Ballot The mares Marjoria D Margaret E and Sweet Pea the latter a sister to Prince Ahmed are all in foal to Zeus at Adelbert Stud
