EXCEEDINGLY FORTUNATE STABLE STARTS FOURTEEN HORSES IN THIS YEARS RACING, Of WHICH THIRTEEN ARE FAILURES AND THE OTHER ONE THE BEST TWO-YEAR-OLD IN ACTION IN MANY YEARS So far as money won was concerned, the Glen Riddle Farm stable was in effect a one-horse stable, although first and last fourteen ran in its colors. The one horse referred to was a host in himself, being the Champion two-year-old Man, o War, and, on public form, one of those phciiomcuons which seldom appear more than once in a decade. Bought by his lucky owner from the Belmont consignment to the Saratoga yearling sales of-1018 for $.",000, this colt made his first npiiearanee in racing in a modest way iu a purse race at l.clmont Park, June !, live-eighths straight, and won iu a canter from Retrieve in 59. He was a 3 to ft favorite. He flew at higher game June 9, when, starting as a 1 to 10 favorite, he won the Keone Memorial Stakes over the same track and ran live and a half furlongs straight in 1:05 in slow going. He won by three lengths, with On Watch second and Anniversary third. At Jamaica, June 21, he won the Youthful Stakes in a canter, with On Watch again second. At Aqueduct, June 23, the Hudson Stakes was his without exerting himself. Here he for the first time paid the penalty of success and carried 130 pounds. Violet Tip, 109 pounds, was second, and Shoal, 115, third. At the same track. July ft, only Ralco and Ace of Aces opposed him in the Treniont Stakes, at three-quarters, and lie won hard held in 1:13. At Saratoga, August 2, lie defeated Upset, Homely and seven more fleet ones in the United States Hotel Stakes and ran its three-quarters with ease in 1:12 with his now usual 130 Kjiii:ls up. Then followed the only defeat marring his otherwise flawless record. This came August 13 in the running of the Sanford Memorial Stakes at three-quarters. Here W. Knapp stole a march with Mr. Whitneys good colt Upset and, taking the lead from Golden I ! room in the stretch, won by a half length from Man o War in the fast time of 1:11 Vf.. Man o War was away slowly and several times pocketed in trying to get through, but came with a rush when clear. He was infinitely best and beaten because not alertly ridden. He carried 130 pounds to 115 on Upset and was greater in defeat under such circumstances than in victory. Next he won the. Grand Union Hotel Stakes at three-quarters in 1:12, beating Upset ;by a length under a pull, with Blazes third arid seven more unplaced. The culmination of his Saratoga campaign came witli the running of the 0,000 nopeful Stakes, August 30. This he won in the saute uncompromising fashion of his other triumphs, finishing four lengths in front of Cleopatra, with Constancy third and Upset one of the live which ran unplaced. This race was run in 1:13 over a slow track, Septcmbet-13 he added the rich Futurity Stakes to his other spoils of the track. He won easing up by two and a half lengths iu 1:11, with John. P. Grier second anil Dominique third. Then his proud owner said he had done enough for one year arid sent him into retirement with confident anticipation of a brilliant career as a three-year-old next year.
