MOBILE TAKES TO RACING Patronage So Good on the First Day an Ex ¬ tension of the Meeting Probable MOP1LK Ala March 10 With a proclamation by the mayor declaring the occasion a half holi ¬ day for the purpose of enabling public spirited citizens to attend the opening of the race meeting here insuring its success the idea being well enough received by the merchants to give their em ¬ ployes an afternoons vacation it was little won ¬ der that the grandstand was jammed to the crowd ¬ ing point and the fair grounds filled to capacity for the inaugural day of racing The Kiawanis organizations also had passed resolutions in favor of the sport sportThe The Chamber of Commerce also had its repre ¬ sentation while state and county officials were also abundantly in attendance Some of the old timers compared the occasion with incidents wit ¬ nessed at the one time famous Haseombe track here which was a stamping ground of the famous thoroughbreds of this country in the early eighties There was a vast difference in the class of starters carrying silks this afternoon and those perform ¬ ing over the Hascombe course but the majority of the spectators were unacquainted with these facts and accepting the present as sufficient showed unbounded enthusiasm for the sjwrt Their interest was infectious and inoculated some of the blase spectators who were here from New Orleans and other racing centers centersThat That it was not all a matter of having come to witness the sport exclusively was attested by the fact that sixteen layers were kept at top speed in the hurriedly improvised betting pavilion The open ¬ ing was more successful than the sponsors expected and already plans are under way to extend the meeting here originally intended to go six days to a meeting of nine days The racing was de ¬ cidedly interesting and wholesome the halfmile track keeping the horses in full view of the spec ¬ tators at all tiires Some of the finishes were exceptionally close and had the spectators in a frenzy of excitement excitementFavorites Favorites disappointed iu three of the dashes the overthrow of Financial ISooster being particularly costly Hay his conqueror was benefited by the action of his rider who cut across in front of the others with him soon after the start and taking the lead held sway throughout throughoutSundnria Sundnria proved a victress in the third race Corydon was the favored one here but he gave way to the mare after he had raced on almost even terms with her for threequarters threequartersMickey Mickey Moore and Tiger liose staged an interest ¬ ing battle in the fourth race with tin finish find ¬ ing the pair only necks apart They absorlwd all the betting attention in the race
