DE LAND RUNS FAST RACE To Win Main Contest of Tuesdays Program Marinelli to Go East Soon SAX DIEGO Cal April 13 Glorious weather coupled with the fact that yesterday the fair sex were the guests of the Tijuana Jockey Club brought out another largesized Tuesday crowd which wit ¬ nessed racingThe a program of interesting racing The red and green colors of W C Weant which have been carried to victory many times of late continued successful yesterday when the fast sprinter De Land carried them to the front in the fiftii race at fiveeighths The unsexcd son of King Olym ¬ pian ran the distance in 100 defeating a fast band of sprinters including the speedy marc Phrone Ward Capably riilden by jockey McCulIough he was rushed into the lead after rounding the far turn and although challenged and menaced in the stretch by Herder and Phrone Ward drew away into a safe lead at the finish The consistent Herder lasted long enough to be second by a neck from Phrone Ward The latter was avay slowly and although carrying top weight made up much ground sightThe but tired when victory was in sight The opening dash for twoyearolds went to the oddson choice Polly AVale which proved convinc ¬ ingly the best Away slowly she ran past the leaders in the last eighth with apparent ease Helen Major was second while the pacemaker Kmina Williams was third thirdAVith AVith favorites scoring in the first and second races it looked like a red letter day for the choices until the finish of the third which resulted in an easy victory for Montgomery Jr a field horse pay ¬ ing better than 20 to 1 His victory marked the maiden success of his rider G Kedfern a lad under contract to AV L Stanfield the veteran horseman who developed C Huel The embryo jockey showed some good horsemanship while astride of Montgomery Jr bringing him up in the last eighth with a welltimed rush to win going away The dangerous fall sustained by jockey Majestic on Sunday while astride of The Desert in the Cof frotli Handicap evidently did not curb his daring spirit for he piloted El Sabio home a winner in the closest finish of the day in th i fourth race It took the hardest kind of riding for Majestic to land his mount in front as Mannikin II was catching him fast Alajah the pacemaker which threat ¬ ened to spreadeagle the others early in tfic race tired badly but managed to savo third ilace ilaceNEGLECTED NEGLECTED VERDI LOON A WINNER WINNERThe The old axiom that to play the longestpriced horse in a small field proved successful in the sixth race when Aerdi Loon the extreme outsider cantered past the finish with a fourlengths ad ¬ vantage over Water Willow and Sweet Apple in the sixth race Sweet Apple which finished third was a victim of bad racing luck She was in re ¬ peated trouble and despite the skill of her experi ¬ enced rider M Buxton third money was the best she could gather at the finish finishClarence Clarence Huxton who brought ten horses here in ¬ cluding War Mask Johnny Dundee Kashmir and others has met with both luck and misfortune since invading the land cf the dons His lucky star shone when he won the 10000 U S Grant Hotel Stakes with War Mask but it was dimmed when that good horse returned to tlie winners ring a dead lame horse Then again fortune smiled on him when his crack colt Johnny Dundee won the 5000 Tijuana Futurity defeating the heretofore unbeaten filly Pepper Tea The greatest misfortune that has befallen Huxton is the number of horses that lie has brought here that hare gone wrong Outside of his veteran campaigner Sasin and his twoyearold Johnny Dundee the others of his string are all crippled and a visit to his barn reminds one of a hospital Kashmir is his only hope to win the 5000 Tijuana Cup at two miles which is to br run next Sunday but this good horse is reported to he anything but sound However Huxtoii is of the opinion that he will get him to the post ready to run barring mishaps that may come between now and the sound of the bugle for the Tijuana Cup Jockey CupJockey Marinelli another development of Tijuana who enjoys the distinction of being the leading rider of 1921 and who was one of the boys to fall during tlie running of the Coffroth Handicap was out to the track little the worse for his trying experi ¬ ence The little Italian saddle artist intends resting for a few days and then departing for his home in New York Marinelli in bidding Tijuana farewell will leave with the remarkable record of having ridden 10T winners in 101 days of racing
