RACING UNDER WAY AT WHEELING WHEELINGWHEELING WHEELING W Va April 18 Under none too favorable weather conditions thoroughbred racing was introduced by tlie Wheeling Driving Club at the local course here today An attractive card of seven well filled races was provided for the occasion and was productive of keen and interesting racing in which the majority of the finishes were close and exciting Tlie chilly weather no doubt injured the attendance considerably which numbered about 1500 but the track an excellent halfmile course was fast and good time was recorded recordedWalter Walter Mack and Hog scored in their respective races by the shortest possible margins The latter canie from behind in the stretch to win in the closing strides and returned the remunerative divi ¬ dend of 104 for each 12 ticket Cousin o Mine also provided a sensation when she returned an even larger price of 103 for 2 after beating Second Cousin in a great stretcli drive driveThe The mutucl system of speculation proved to be somewhat of a novelty also and new to local racing patrons As a result many horses paid larger prices to show than to place placeIJarness IJarness racing has heretofore been given the pref ¬ erence locally but tlie demand for the runners lias influenced the management to at least give tiiis branch of tlie sport a thorough trial and prepara ¬ tions are already under way to give another meeting here in the autumn autumnThe The present meeting will continue for nine more days terminating on April 28
