TRYSTERS WONDERFULRACE Derby Favorite Makes Impressive Showing Though Beaten Careful Wins Chesapeake Stakes StakesPaul Paul Jones the Susquehanna SusquehannaHandicap Handicap HAVRE DE GRACE Md April 23 Rainy weather and a sloppy track ruined what promised to be the best afternoons racing witnessed this spring in Maryland Withdrawals were numerous every race suffering in this respect Despite tin unfavorable conditions prevailing a surprisingly large crowd was present presentMuch Much interest was shown in the first appearance of the year of several prominent Kentucky Derby candidates and of those that did start II P Whitneys Tryster made the l est showing Exodus and Star Voter were starters in the Chesapeake Stakes in which Star Voter finished second beaten in easy fashion by Walter J Salmons Careful which is looked upon as a sprinter more than any ¬ thing else Exodus made a poor showing in this race but in the following stake event the Susque ¬ hanna Handicap a dash of a mile for all ages Tryster forced Paul Jones to stand a sinewstrain ¬ ing drive to beat him out three parts of a length It was a duel between the pair from the top of the stretch to the finish Tryster conceded lumps of weight to everything in the race and was equally weighted with Paul Jones which incidentally won last years running of the Derby Taking the line that todays race will improve Tryster it looks like lie will continue as favorite for the big Kentucky event The mile was run in 141 a full second faster than Careful ran her first mile in the Chesa ¬ peake Stakes StakesScratches Scratches reduced the field in the Chesapeake to five starters with Star Voter the public choice The Ross colt however found the gallant filly Careful too speedy for him and was forced to follow her borne decisively beaten at every stage of the race There was some excuse for Exodus poor showing as he met interference on the first turn where he almost fell and had little chance thereafter thereafterThe The Susquehanna Handicap was a thriller from start to finish H P Whitneys champion two yearold of last year Tryster giving Paul Jones the battle of his life Last years Derby winner set a fast pace all the way but try as he did lie could not shake off the game Tryster which raced almost abreast of the winner throughout Rounding the last turn Tryster made a determined bid to wrest the lead from Paul Jones and after getting almost on even terms with him tired slightly right at the end It was a great race and a grand finish with victor and conquered alike sharing in the applause of the enthusiastic crowd crowdRELIABLE RELIABLE BILLY KELLY VICTORIOUS VICTORIOUSOld Old reliable Billy Kelly a great favorite with Maryland racegoers picked up 132 pounds and won the Aero Handicap a dash of threequarters of a mile Butwell nursed him along until straightened out in the homestretch where he drew away and won with something in reserve at the finish finishJockey Jockey Ensor has been
