OLD LUTTEUR III IS STILL ACTIVE From Paris comes an interesting story of horses at exercise Mr J Hcnnessys trainer Batchelor appeared at Enghein one morning recently when jockey Mitchell was exercising the star of the Hciinessy string over the obstacles in preparation for an eAcnt at Auteiiil Batchelor Avas not much impressed Avith the form of his young candidate for the Auteuil race and remarked that the hack horse which had conveyed him to the course could defeat the pride of the stable Jockey Mitchell took excep ¬ tion to the remark and the pair accordingly Avere matched Avith luncheon as a stake Mitchell rode the thoroughbred and a Negro apprentice was selected by Batchelor to ride his standard bearer The nice Avas at about two miles in sloppy going The hack horse never allowed the thorough ¬ breds saddle girth to get past his nose and the young horse Avon by half a length ridden out Mitchell Avas visibly surprised Avhcn returning to the paddock that he had so narrowly Avon his Avager and then Batchelor informed him that hiss com ¬ petitor Avas Lutteur III Avinner of the Grand Na ¬ tional some ten years ago Lutteur III is eighteen years old
